I want to buy a diamond ring for my wife. I am living in Delhi. Can anybody help me to know where should I buy from and what to look for in terms of buying diamond and its resale....

Gold ring is a better bet as far as resale value is concerned.

Diamonds are not an investment, but if you've decided on getting them, go ahead.

Diamonds can get me laid. Please tell me other alternatives.

Stupid. The same money can get you laid more. Buy some local papers and go through the classifieds.

If you have better motives, buy gold. In the price of a diamond ring, you can get a good gold necklace.

Diamond and gemstone merchant here :p

Its recommonded to Get solitaire ring that too certified. It have international value. Secondly, if u want to buy diamond jewellery, its not like it doesnt have resale. Gold can be sold at the current prices and diamonds are afterall diamonds, so it depends on the seller/shop how much he can give you when you return the article. Keep in mind always get whiter, clearer and not very small diamonds as they are complete crap. You can have an idea when you will compare it with other articles.

What's the resale value of diamonds?

Say I buy a diamond ring for 25k. And I walk back out of the store, and go back in right away. How much would I be able to recoup?

Solitares have 90% resale value .The percentage cut also depends on dealer to dealer, but, solitares have maximum return value. Solitare value keeps on increasing and they can be sold on the values higher than purchase value after some years, though they wont hike at the rate as much as gold prices are hiking. But, it is a diamond and have a value, and is indestructible, and lastly, a status symbol. Hardly someone sell his jewellery. The certificate with solitares can help get the international value of that diamond means it can be sold worldwide by that value.

Small diamonds which are clear and of good quality, depends on dealer to dealer how much he will deduct and buy his article back. So, its completely on the mercy of seller. For a 25k article you can get 80-90% value back, even 100% amount back if you have a good relation with the seller and if you will go back in right away :-P .Search for a trusted seller, who can provide you a good resale.

When you say not to get very small, what is the minimum acceptable size ?

Good relation with the seller means you are a repeat customer. If you are a repeat customer then you trust the seller.

Finding out the resale value before buying something is tricky though. Where does one find second hand diamonds for sale to check the rates and independently gauge resale value.

Actually, being a seller since 1985, i provide a resale of 85% cashback on any diamond jewellery and 90% on solitares. Though buying very small diamond jewellery is not recommonded because the most rejected diamonds are used in it. 5-10 cent diamonds are ideal. Its all dealer's policy.

By Finding out resale i meant to say to check with the seller how much money(percentage of selling price) will be returned when it will come selling the item back to him. Its not like you have to check the market value of diamond that time and then evaluate.
Secondly gold prices are evaluated seperately when the item is returned. So if the gold prices are hiked you can get more than you invested. That 85% return is only for those diamonds. The price of diamonds will be mentioned in invoice seperately.

Hope i am clear enough :-)

So you are saying get it in writing at the time of buying ?

Diamonds are not an investment, but if you've decided on getting them, go ahead.
Then getting them second hand should be a steal. if only one could find such sellers.

A diamond is a diamond, right :)

Even second hand will cost same as gold prices will be levied according to rate, and there wont be any major difference in diamond prices. Diamond jewellery is sold by addition of gold rates + diamond rate seperately. Diamond rate increases slowly. But still you can save an okish amount or it may depend on seller though you will have to find the perfect seller.

If you are looking for higher profits on selling then go for pure gold hallmark jewellery as it depends its selling on market price. So, higher the gold rates, higher the profit. But, keep in mind, you wont get 100% price of gold on selling the gold jewellery as well, because resale of gold jewellery accounts only for *percentage of pure gold* in article. No article is made of 100% pure gold. So, if you sell it immediately after buying, you will still not get complete money back.
