Buying I phone from US

Hi !!
My friend is going to the US for 2 weeks.
He can get an I phone for me..
But i guess a new one would not be possible because of the AT&T terms and co.
Can someone suggest any other ways through which i could get a cheap deal on Iphone.
One way is to search for US based forums.(any particular sites ??)
Please suggest a way out.
