Me buying a PS3! hopefully

wanted suggestions for the accessories I should buy along with it. Currently i have come up with

PS3 120gb

SIXAXIS controller (is it worth it? is it available here?) price?

Blu-ray remote (blu-ray movies!, primary reason for buying ps3 over xbox360)

HDMI cable

any likable faceplates?

Is there any way I can get a xbox360 style controller for PS3? Something like this in India?
A local vendor has quoted me 20k for PS3 120gb only with warranty and about 17k without warranty, but will go with warranty only.

which would be a good place to buy? the trustworthy vendor or croma where i can get 3 years warranty? or sony dealership?

also is there any chance i can get a game of my choice free? (2010 Fifa worldcup, secondary reason for buying ps3, as it didnt release for PC).

Thanks,

Moshel

1. Why do you want an old Six Axis when the PS3 bundles a DS3. If you want to get a second controller, get another DS3. DS3 has rumble in addition to the motion sensing.

2. BD Remote is not that much of a must have accessory. You can control most aspects of the video player with the DS3 controller as well.

3. HDMI cable or HDMI-DVI cable is mandatory purchase if you want to connect to a LCD TV or Monitor.

Your local vendor is quoting a bit too much IMO. Check eBay for approximate pricing. Buy one off Croma which can give you an additional 2 years' warranty if you pay around 750 INR extra.

Faceplates? Since when did PS3 come up with changeable ones? There's none AFAIK. You can buy skins if that's what you meant.

And the PS3 bundles a DS3 controller which has the 6axis motion sensing plus the dual shock capability.

Buy an HDMI cable. That's about it.

1. I didn't know that, so that goes off the list now!

2. Yes, but @ about Rs. 500 in grey market, not a problem. still if its above 1k, might give it a miss since DS3 controller works.

I will be able to take full potential of a blu-ray disc using DS3 only?

3. I have a LG PQ60, Cannot think of connecting to it without HDMI cable! The TV's remote becomes universal if anything is attached to TV via HDMI, but since PS3 does not have IR, don't think it will work. Will it or will not?

err...faceplates...sorry was never in touch too much with PS3 world. but I did have an idea that there was something we could put on a PS3 to change its looks!

I bought my PS3 250GB GOW bundle from a nearby decent electronics shop for 22k (reduced from 22.5k)

And i was quoted 19k for the 120GB one so you are getting overcharged.

20K for a PS3 120GB is a bit too high.. It best price for it i've seen is 17.5K.. Yeah, its legit one only..

checked out croma

Rs. 19,990/- for 120gb (no game included) + ~1k for a total of 3 yrs warranty....

Rs. 22,490/- for 250 gb (GOW3 bundle) + ~1k for a total of 3 yrs warranty....

GOW3 is as per my knowledge one of the best games on PS3 and would like to play it.

I don't care about 120 gb or 250 gb. but a 250gb HDD+GOW3 is a worthy upgrade i guess? or I could get a 120gb and buy a second hand copy of GOW3.

Also, about using the PS3 as a media player (WDTV types). does it support a large number of codecs like the WDTV? is it possible to make it support large no. of codecs? this is one more reason to buy a PS3!

by the way can I live on mostly buying second hand games on PS3?, there is hopefully no issue that if someone has played it online or something then some other person cannot play it (online or offline whatever).

Get the 120GB version - spending 2.5k on a mere 120GB upgrade IMO is not worth it when Sony gives you an option to upgrade the internal 2.5" drive.

As for GOW3 - do you like the hack-n-slash genre? I suggest you watch few gameplay videos. Grab a second or an nth hand copy - IMO so long as the disc is in pristine condition it should hardly concern you. There are a lot many exclusive titles apart from this genre that you are going to buy.

You can buy as many second hand titles as possible - there's no such CD key and related issues here.

And yes the PS3 can be used as a media player and reads many codecs. There's a thread on the same in this very section. Browse by it.

take it but before taking google discount vouchers fro croma u will easily found a Rs 1000 off one

and yes with Playstation Media Server u can play any fileformat on ur PS3 directly from comp

I'd say don't compromise on warranty even if you have to shell out a little more. I myself purchased my 120gb one from Croma with extended warranty.

As for the accessories, BD remote is a nice one although you can use your controller also. I don't know about grey market prices for remote.

About the 250gb and the 120gb, it depends whether you really want to play GOW3 or not. I won't say 250GB is much required, unless you're going to store blu-ray movies on it. If you're going to stream the movies then you don't need this much space on PS3. Also, you can always upgrade the hard drive later on (with 500gb or less).

You can go with combo offer, complete the game ASAP if you like it and sell it for Rs1.5k (I'm not very sure about prices for games received with console. Check in forum please). So basically in 1k you're going to get the 250GB and you would have played one game. If you're not much keen on GOW3, then save the money and spend it on game which you really want to play and get the accessories which you desire.

Thanks alot to everyone for their valuable comments. You have helped me big time in making my decision. I have finally decided to buy

PS3 120gb/250gb (from croma with total 3 yrs warranty)

HDMI cable (will the 700 rs. HDMI cable be good enough?) My TV is 720p

Blu-ray remote

Additional DS3 controller, canceled, will buy it when required.

Still undecided on GOW3, I have played it on PSP and do like the hack & slash genre, and will play it on the PS3. But currently my priority is to play FIFA world cup 2010. Doesn't make sense to even go for a second hand copy of GOW3 which will cost around 1700, cos in 800 rs. more would get a 250 gb hdd.

Game: Fifa world cup 2010 & Smackdown vs. raw 2010 (if anybody wants to sell second hand copies, I am ready to buy it). or will buy it from Intecity.in. its cheaper there than in the market.

Movie: Angels & Demons. again, second hand acceptable if in a good condition, especially the box (good condition disk is obvious).

I found the site called Khojguru for discount coupons, but Ahmedabad is not listed..

Also, I have a 4 yr old Sony HTIB, I see no great connectors at back. for audio in there is a stereo RCA cable. Is it possible to connect the PS3 to the HT through it?

Get a Rs.230 cable from Ebay. It's more than enough. BTW the Croma extended warranty would cost you Rs.750 for 2 years and not 1k.

I got a 110 Rs. cable recently via eBay. Works flawlessly. Although do not tamper with those connectors by bending and all. Last time I tried removing the cable, the connector remained at the HDMI port and the cable came off.

As for your Sony HTIB, you can hook the RCA outs from the PS3 to the receiver or DVD player for the Aux input.

You can sell off any game in our in-house market or the market sections of other forums' for about Rs. 200~300 less than the price you bought it for. The value doesn't keep depreciating either.

Well I finalised everything and today went to croma, and was put in a new dilemma. Croma has the PS3 80gb phat in stock! same price as the 120 gb.

the dilemma is, Let me know if I am wrong:
we can install Linux on the phat version and I can use it as a complete media server being able to play any file format via a USB hard disk.

in case of a slim, I will have to stream HD videos via Wifi?
Is is possible to stream HD (720p) videos through cable if my laptop does not have HDMI?

Any other benefits/trade offs. please let me know asap, will be buying tomorrow.

Thanks,
Moshel

IMO since you are not getting any hefty discount on the phat 80GB, its better to get the Slim..

You can stream 720p to you Slim via WiFi without needing to install linux..

^^ Wifi is not the way i wish to go for, for streaming videos to PS3.

or maybe i can, does a wirless n+ router (cheapest one) have enough juice to go through thick walls and about 20 -25 feet (which includes walls)

They must have run out of stocks. Do not buy the older one. Have patience.

Not with the newer firmwares. They have removed the Other OS option since that allows users to hack into the system as proved by Geo Hotz.

Nope. For using the PS3 as a media server does not require the Other OS feature. You need to install a client on the PC from which you intend to stream your data.

Just curious, but did you go through the PS3 media server thread whose link I'd posted before in this thread? You should not be asking this had you gone through it.

Laptop and HDMI has nothing to do with it. You are going to need a router to have the PS3 connected to it. Either via WiFi or through the ethernet cable. The PS3 would access the data on your computer through the router.
