After a lot of research and contemplation I have decided to upgrade my sound system to a good one. I have historically just gone in for the below average creative or altec 2.1's but not this time.

I am planning on buying an Edifier S550 along with the ASUS Xonar DG sound card. I listen to a lot of music and watch a fair number of movies over the weekend. The initial thought was to go in for a good 2.1, but somehow I cannot seem to be logical once I read about the S550. It's outright gorgeous!

What do people think? Anyone own it? Price? Competition?

You will need a much better sound card in the range of 6-7k to drive those speakers ! xonar dg will just not cut it out ! it would be a lot better to get a onkyo 3300 cause it accepts s/PDIF inputs ( that you alrady have with your motherboard ). and this willbe better for movies and games than s550.+ you get a receiver that is future proof( you can upgrade speakers later

a 2.1 will never be able to procreate surround sound. But in movies & games you also need a powerful subwoofer to provide the cinematic & gaming experience. These 2.1 have powerful subs.

On the other hand 5.1 under ten grand lacks a powerful subwoofer. It is trade off, you want surround sound or powerful blow all in your face sound. I will definitely buy a 2.1 at your budget.

Thank you! I agree with you 100% Been reading about the Onkyo 3300 and 3400. Seems like a great buy but a bit of a budget push.

Surprisingly the S550 seems to be out of stock for the longest time. They are bringing on the S550D which is prices at 30K!! I think I will look into the no-commercial 2.1's apart from the Edifier.

Or maybe I look for what's replaced those beautiful Altec MX5021's

So if you are now eyeing on a 2.1 setup go for Edifier C3 or Logistics Z623.Both seems to be better than MX 6021's

If you want a 5.1 setup for 20k then don't go for pc speakers blindly. It's better to get onkyo's at that range since spending 20k just for speakers doesn't give you performance you are looking for,you have to have a good sound card for it like Xonar d2X etc

Better get 2.1 with decent sound card

FWIW both the 3100 and the 3300 sounded like dog poo when I heard them. Not auditioned the newer ones.

I finally went for the more expensive separates solution.

Thank you everyone!! I have shelved my search as of now. Collecting funds for something which will make me happy!

I have heard the Z623 and the MX 6021; very bass driven. The MX 5021 had fabulous mids. Do you recommend the edifier c3? Seems quite underpowered for its size and weight. Any recommendations on the Harman Kardon soundsticks or the Corsair SP2500?
