hi guys....i want to do small mods on my cabinet...but don't know how to go about it. Please help me out..
I would like to know how to cut the cabinet myself...ie which tool can be used to perform the task.
Mine is an iball server cabinet i701.
Thanks...

I have the same cabinet - I had the window cut at a signboard maker's. They did an excellent job on it. After that, fitted in a 4mm acrylic sheet and attached it with SS screws (you will have to drill the acrylic sheet in the proper places).

Hey AK3D... can you post some shots. Though I've different case I'm planning to do some mods on my casing (Side Window, Internal Thermal Zones Separation and stuff).

hai...thats exactly the same cabi i've got..

and the modded one looks fantastic....can u tell me which tools can be used to the metal at home....

also is there a way to add a large fan to the front panel similar to a antec 900??

Unless you've used a Dremel or so, you shouldn't really do it by yourself. You might end up making a mess of the case window.

You can't fit a fan in the front to this particular case - I mean, you can, but you will need to cut away quite a bit of plastic (on the outside) and metal (on the inside where the 120mm fan fits), and it doesn't make any sense. The fitting will be all wrong afterwards. You will also lose the space where the pw/reset switches are fitted and will have to create new holes for those. Unless you want to do so much, leave well enough alone :) .

If you wanna do it at home, then u'll need some basic tools like Ruler, Filer, small saw, hand held drill machine etc. But if u've got a costly case then have it modded by professionals only.

I have a cheap Cabby (and I am too lazy to go and buy all the tools :bleh: ) hence, I mod my Cabby with whatever I get in the house. All I needed was some old kitchen knife (with jagged edge), big and small filers and a pen knife toolkit (just like a Swiss Knife). I have used the kitchen knife to cut small parts of my steel case and some plastic parts too... Then I do the filling with the filer to smoothen and shape the cuts...
Here are some photos of what I did yesterday...

My two 320 GB HDDs were very hot at 54 degree each, so I wanted to fit a HDD cooler I had brought earlier. But that did not fit in the 5.25" bay (coz the HDDs were on a anti-vibration stabilizer). The only thing I could do was cut the front covers of the 5.25" bays and fit a spare 80mm fan there...

So out came my trusted jagged-edged kitchen knife and after some careful measurements, cutting and filling, I got the fan attached. The HDDs cooled to 45 degrees with the fan filter on and without the filter it cooled till 41 degrees. Now I am planning to put some heatsinks on the HDDs to help dissipate more heat off...
Also, I had modded my Cabby some time earlier. Here is the text (I had posted at some other forum)
Fitting the TrU120Ex in my Cabby was a close shave... The heatpipes were peeking out a little. So I had to mod my cabby to accomodate the Ex.

So here's how I did it...

Traced out the heatpipes location on the acrylic sheet after removing it from the side window. Then made small holes on the marked location by passing a hot screwdriver through them. Then increased the size of the hole by scraping the holes using a plain edged sharp kitchen knife

After that I cut the metal using a jagged edged kitchen knife

Finished it with a Metal File to make the sharp edges blunt. Then painted the filed edge with black permanent marker

Yaa, I know it is a very crude method of modding, but I achieved the results that I desired!!! And that's what matters...
