Why is it that i'm connected to the internet on dial up, at 46.6 kbps, but i download files at about 5 kbps? I'm asking this because last night while downloading a file from megaupload, I was at a speed of about 10.5 kbps for about an hour of the download. Is it possible to set up myself up so it is always at that speed or better? I'm also curious to know what, if im downloading at about 5kbps and am connected at 46.6kbps, is the other 40 or so kbps being used for?? god, dialup is so frustrating, and any info anyone has may just prevent me from jumping of a roof with my laptop... thanks

err, you connect at 57.6 kilo'BITS' - divide by 8 and you are downloading at 7.2 kilo'BYTES' - add imperfect line conditions and you are left with 5 kilobytes.

^^ the connection speed is always measured in number of 'bits' per second. A 'bit' is represented by 'b'

The download speeds are measured in 'bytes.' A 'byte' is represented by 'B'

yep, the capital B is different from a small b.

8bits make one Byte. (8 bits = 1 Byte)

on ur connection of 46.6kbps (kilo bits per second), u can have a theoritical maximum downlaod speed of 46.6/8=5.825kBps (kil Bytes per second).

Since u r getting 10.5kBps download speeds, u r virtually hooked up to a 10.5x8=84kbps connection..

1 bit = 0 or 1, true or false, smallest unit.
8 bits = 1 byte (word)
8 b = 1 B
48 kbps = 48/8 = 6 kBps
adding the network headers baggage 2 more bits, the total comes about 10 bits(8+2).
i.e. 48/10 = 4.8 kBps speed you can max expect or in a dial-up 56 kbps connxn the max speed possibe is 56/10 = 5.6 kBps.

as for your 10.5 kBps(not 10.5 kbps i hope) d/l speed, were you loading text files or webpages, try some speed tests to determine your speed. it will never exceed your 56 kbps(5-6 kBps) limit.

sorry.. it was 10.5 KB/sec.. That was the first time it was downloading that fast, that ive noticed.. I was downloading an RAR file. And i have the little computer on my taskbar that tells me im connected at 46.6 Kbps, hopefully thats accurate enough.. thanks guys
