is the error in the picture below normal for a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3300622AS 300GB SATA 2 HDD with 16MB Cache & NCQ -

Saiyan show me your s.m.a.r.t page screenshot from Everest please because you have the same HDD too.

naa this looks like a hardware failure, i tested on my 400gb 7200.8, i get 100 and since the threshold is 97, 69 is a pretty bad value
but cannot be sure....speedfan n other sw always give weird smart values with seagate hdds

:( :S

now what do i do?

Here's what I found.
Spin retry event is logged each time the drive was unable to spin its platters up to the rated rotation speed in the due time. Spin-up attempt was aborted and retried. This typically indicates severe controller or bearing problem, but may be sometimes caused by power supply problems.

So, if that reading is accurate, its a serious problem :(

Darn it man - my 2 Maxtor drives are showing higher figures for spin retry failure rates than your HDD - but Everest says that it is not a problem ... GO FIGURE .... :) .... WHAT ME WORRY ?? ... NO - NOT WORRIED....

EDIT: If there are any problems they are listed under the DATA column and all our drives show a big fat 0 under this.... :hap2:

mine one is saying a value of 253 higher than thresold but everest says no problemo.
me using 40 gb samsung sp4001n pata.

well well well now is the twist .. udit r u gonna send it back to saiyan for rma? or u'll get national warranty from calcutta only..
"i really wanna see if he gets warranty from kolkata"

BTW, a small doubt that I have :

Judging from the text in BOLD, isnt a lower value better?

(However yes I did do some research and all the places mentioned lower values being bad)

P.s: Irrelevant, but my 160gig Seagate reports a value of 100 too

Frankly speaking,i have never bothered to care much about such problems cos i make it a point to regularly back up important data on DVDs.

I would suggest RMA the drive.May be you get lucky to get a 400GB,like Appo. This lucky guy got a 400 GB in lieu of 250GB as replacement.

@ Eazy..

My Maxtor is showing the EXACT same values...

All this really makes no sense to me - I do not even want to know about all this SMART chakkar - everywhere I look I read opposite details about SMART readings - look at what Eddy has mentioned in his post. I had 4 HDDs die on me last year so I have learned my lesson - all of these 4 drives were in perfect condition according to SMART and on next boot they were paper weights :@

I buy a HDD everytime I get any spare money - got about 10 - I keep mirror images of my HDDs and these I keep disconnected from the computer. I keep 3 HDD as external USB drives and I do a DAILY backup to them - Now I dont care if any HDD dies on me as I have a mirror of each drive waiting in the wings to take over. If a HDD dies then it is too bad for the supplier of the HDD - HE BETTER REPLACE THE HDD. :)

I used to run that STOOPID software named HDD something - cant remember the exact name - which used to give you the exact date each HDD would die on !!! Each of my drives according to that software was going to die in about a year

@UDIT - BUDDY - take my advice and forget about this SMART chakkar and go buy any external USB HDD and start making regular backups - AND - buy your HDDs from a source you are sure will not hassle you for replacements.
