Can a Canadian or US imported phone works or support indian cellular network?

Guys, my relatives are sending a smart phone for me from Canada so I want to know ki will that phone support the indian cellular network, I mean will it work here? I've heard that there is some differnce of band or something dunno wth is that :huh:

HI.. its depends upon does urs Smart phone will supposrt teh GSM/CDMA band here in india.. well in india mostly GSM operators operates in the specific band.. pls confirm with urs other side as well indian side.

If it is a unlocked phone and is tri band gsm or quad band gsm then it will work 100%
