I am wondering about using my Inspiron 6400 as a download rig for a while(i am at home n the desktop here is kaput rite now) as the switchin off n back on is a real pain...:bleh:
So if i plug in the laptop to the power supply can i keep it on for prolonged periods without causing any trouble? :ohyeah:

Under the power option i have set the options as(when plugged in):
Turn of monitor in 10 mins
Turn off hdd never
System standby never
System hibernates never

Are there any possible adverse effects to this experiment?? Or has anyone tried this before?? :S :S

I use my S96j as a download rig 'cause of some issues with my desktop.

You should connect it to the UPS and run it on AC Power, remove the battery.

If it's a high end laptop with a dedicated VGA of some sort, it might run really hot - so I tend to keep the fan on and cover it with a really thing sheet to prevent dust from entering anywhere near it.

Not the most practical thing to do, especially since the S96j runs exceptionally hot, but I don't have a choice as of now.

Hope this helped.

my inspiron 1705 is on for almost the wholeday. sometimes on for 4-5 days continously. ya u can surely use it as a download rig. mine is used for 3dmax & renderings etc with the power plugged in at almost all times. been fine so far.

Absolutely,...without issues...Just make sure that you don't block the exhaust vents :)

No issues with my Compaq also. I used to run my home servers on my compaq laptop for weeks together, since there were problems of power cuts in pune during summers and laptop coupled to a UPS gave me GOOD backups. Though i placed the laptop on a iron frame, so that there is unrestricted space below it. Placed a couple of 120 MM fans below the main fan of lappy and other below the hdd with the plastic cover removed. Never had problems with temps, though that was peak summer and my flat being on the top floor was like an oven during day time.

Just make sure it has access to cool air, and its not jammed in a corner with all vents blocked.

Start download and close the lid.

well i am in nasik rite...and its pretty cool here right now..
also the laptop is placed on a table with a fan above it....
well just one more thing...when i close the lid the i get disconnected from the net...i mean the lan gets disconnected and i am using the 24online client for hathway...any work around for this??

Hehe...go to control panel>power settings>advanced setting and choose "do nothing" from the dropdown for the option "when i close my lid"

^^ Yup thats correct. I had linux so no issues with that. Or u can close the lid to the point the LCD turns off.

Also not much point in keeping a fan above it. Keep the fan at 90 deg to the lappy.

LAPPY <-<-<- A

<-<-<-<-<-<- N

And if possible keep the lappy on top of two thick books so that it has some clear space below it.

^^ arre...no need for any of that...

just

1- Set power setting to no action when lid is closed

2- Make sure you haven't kept the laptop on a pillow or a soft surface which could block the vents ...thats all....it's next to impossible to fry your laptop with heat as all the heat sensitive components inside have a thermal cut-off threshold...the only thing you could cause damage with excess heat is the battery...that's it!

^^ True very true... But the point is not damage to laptop but to keep it running. i.e. since its a download rig it should keep running and not shutdown coz of heat.

There is no need of fan but keeping the laptop elevated facilitates more air volume below it.

i have seen the antec laptop coolers...but i dont think my laptop gets that hot...the temps stay at abt 45c when i am using it a bit...and drop down to 36c when left idle...

Doubt those Vantec Laptop coolers are any good, lol.

Bet they heat up more than they cool.

Though I believe iBall has some laptop ascension table thing or something, lifts the laptop up at an angle with lots and lots of open space under it.

Thing it goes for 400IRS or something on eBay India.
