Can I create a recovery partition myself?

Tomorrow I am going to install windows 7 on my laptop. It is a completely blank 320 GB hdd.

Is there a way to create a recovery partition like those which come in new laptops?

This is to ensure that in case in future windows crashes i can restore everything from this recovery partition. If we can create then how much space I should allocate to it?
