Guys,

Can I go with Windows 7 with my config? (my 2ndy-gaming rig)

PURPOSE: Gaming, mostly Source games.
  • AMD Athlon X2 64Bit 4200 939Socket (2.2 GHz)
  • nVIDIA Chipset
  • 4GB DDR1 400MHz RAM
  • AMD-ATi HD 6670 1gb DDR5 Graphics card
  • I can add a small SSD if needed.

Pls suggest, should I install Windows 7 (64bit) or stay with Windows XP (32 bit) ?

Yea! I know. But considering his old hardware and driver availability issue for Windows 7 (64-bit) and considering he is about to migrate from Windows XP (32 -bit) , Windows 7 (32-bit) seems a better choice to me. But still OP should first give a try to Win 7 (64 bit).

Best option for you is to get Win 7 64bit else stick with Win XP 32 bit.

SSD will top off the max-speed supported by your board. Make it the OS disk if possible.

Win XP is very light weight as compared with Win 7, if you want to game 24x7 then get win XP 32-bit.

Else go for Win 7 64-bit. I like to game but I still willingly sacrifice a little performance for the UI of Win7.

I have observed that compared to Win XP, Windows 7 is much lighter. It occupies less space on the hard drive too, and runs lighter than XP on the same configuration. I have installed Windows 7 on a couple of systems which were running Windows XP earlier, and the result is great!

So, if the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor passes the system, go for Windows 7.

I think with 4 GB RAM, Windows 7 32-bit will be better? Because, Windows 7 64-bit runs better if there is 8 GB of RAM, right? I haven't had experience with any 64-bit OS yet.

^ I'm running windows 7 x64 on just 2GB ram from years. No problems faced till now.
You can speed it up by disabling Aero and using classic theme. Windows uses just around 700MB ram then.

What you've observed is incorrect, Win XP is lighter both on the HDD( 750MB(XP) vs 2.5GB(Win 7) ) as well as on the Physical Memory( 118MB(XP) vs 512MB at least(Win7) ).
A 32-bit OS can allocate only upto 3.256GB of ram, so if you have 4GB consider using 64-Bit. Since WinXP 64 bit has really really bad driver support consider using Win7 64-bit .
