Guys i have a portable hdd of 500gb..
I keep my some useful data in it which i dont want to lose...
And, i use the HDD for taking stuff from my friends, so sometimes due to virus attacks i need to format my HDD flushing all my important stuff with that..

I want to know is there any way i can partition my HDD and use one partition for permanently dumping the data and one for getting stuff from my frnds so that i case of virus attack, just i need to format that partition...like we can do in Computers by partitioning the HDD....pls suggest what to do

Yes you can partition your HDD... Try Partition Wizard..

Also get a good Antivirus, If you already have one then make sure you scan your HDD when you connect it... better yet do not connect to your friends PC unless they have AV solution running in their systems...

Precaution is better than cure ;)

u can obviously partition ur hdd... from 1.disk managemnt 2. any 3rd party s/w 3. using a win 7 dvd ( i prfr this option) .....

but the prblm is virus and trojans generally tend to affect all the partitions so u need to format evry time all the partitions... so the best resort is partion it up and scan with a gd av before opening it in ur comp//

Yes you can definitely partition your HDD, but partitioning the HDD doesn't make it immune to virus, when you have to get something from your friend, you will have to connect it to your friend system, if that system is virus infected, then it will get to your whole HDD regardless of how many partition you make.

If your dump softwares or some executable files, then virus like win32.sality will clean your backup as they attack the exe files :P

I will rather suggest you to check your friends system before connecting your HDD to it and also have a bice AV for yourself:)
