I have a Pentium 4 2.66 GHz CPU, 2GB RAM system. With this, can I add any graphic card to play full hd videos (or atleast HD)? Or should I upgrade my hardware?

If your existing mobo has a PCI-E x16 Slot then you can put in any 8 series onwards nVIDIA card or 3 series ATi card to get GPU HD support.

i think you will be able to play HD videos. but may not be upto the mark. Your GPU maynot be able to bear the load of HD videos and it may drop frames. Post your mobo model number.

Just certain 720p videos with coreavc. 1080p will stutter very badly on your present cpu. You have two options: get a ati/nv card which will decode HD but its playability is only for certain HD profiles or upgrade your machine :ohyeah:

Hello friends,

I have similar computer configuration and would like to play full HD videos through HDMI on graphics card to TV & AVR.
I would also like passthrough for DTS-HDMA, Dolby TrueHD and the conventional DTS, AC3, LPCM as well.

Board : Intel D945 GCR / PCI(E) = yes
Processor : Pentium 4, 2.66GHz
RAM: 2GB DDR2
SMPS : 350W some local brand, ready to spend on another
HDD : ready to spend on another
OS : Windows XP, would like to keep it same.

Please suggest a suitable graphics card and player for full HD video playback. I dont usually go gaming, but something capable should always be better.

Thanks in advance.

Get an AMD 5450/6450. Both are the same, so which ever is cheaper, go with that.

Damn is it necessary to bump a year old thread.

@newvirus2008 , you could have started a new thread

Yeah, true, but then its OK. But the thing that had me  was pradeep's response! He obviously did not see the rest of the posts!

You should have a PCI Express Slot. Its 915. Its should have one

Thank you very much for your responses.

But which AMD 5450 is able to bitstream HD audio with windows XP? XFX 5450 (HD545X-ZCH2) for 2500 and Asus 5450 (EAH5450DIGD3LP) for 2400 are the two models available here. 6450s are way costlier than 5450s in my place(3000, 3100).

Should I change to Windows 7 with my old grandfather computer?

If your pc/laptop has mini PCI-E slot you can try using Broadcom crystal hd decoder, BCM70015(BCM970015), hardly consumes 1 watt of power and comfortably plays 1080p, it's awesome tiny card.
