Hi folks, Back again for some suggestions in reviving a dying PC.

The following is my Specs

Processor Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70GHz
Motherboard VIA P4M266-8235 (Socket 478)
RAM 128MB DDR @ 134MHz (2.5-3-3-6)
HDD 40GB Seagate ST340016A (IDE)
GPU Onboard 32MB RAGE 128 PRO Ultra GL AGP
Monitor LG Flatron E700S 17â€
ODD HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B
ATAPI CD-RW 52X24
OS Windows XP SP2
I primarily have put this as a downloading rig, but these days it really slowing down.
What can I do to spruce it up a bit more.

Budget of 3K – 5K

Get a 512MB used DDR RAM stick from the market section. Avg. price is ~Rs.500. It will definitely spruce up the system. Any other upgrade to that rig is not just a waste of money.
Alternatively u can also get a new 512MB stick for Rs.800 from manufacturers like Hynix. They come with 1 years manufacturers warranty.

sell your current mobo, processor, ram.it will fetch around 1000 and replace with atom board(Rs.2800),1gb ram(Rs.1200-1400) and new psu(FSP saga II 350w Rs.1500)this will help to save electricity.

I like Vip's suggestion

few questions

When did DDR come with 134Mhz?

I thought it was 266/333/400Mhz

Install Windows XP SP3 Home or Professional since it is supported.

Do not put heavy softwares on it.

Use a good antivirus which is low on resources.

Last but not the least use Ubuntu instead of Windows.

the ram maybe sdram 133mhz.

VIA P-Series P4M266 823X Specification

Memory Type: DDR

Memory Speed: PC2100, PC2700

Memory Type: Non-ECC Non-Registered,

Memory Slot(s): 2

Max. Memory Per System: 2048MB (2GB)

Max. Memory Per Slot: 1024MB (1GB)

Hence, DDR 266Mhz and DDR 333Mhz are supported. This means DDR 400 will also run fine (will clock itself to 333mhz automatically)

@Abra (OT): Since its a download rig and you wish to revive your current system, here's my opinion

1. Buy a DDR 400/333 Mhz 512MB ram as suggested by others: Rs. 800

2. Also you need to buy a good power supply right now. -> FSP Saga 350w / Zebronics 350w Pro / Gigabyte LC400 Psu (buygamingstuff)

+This will reduce power consumption to almost half (Old generic PSUs when running at 50c+ temp usually give ~45% efficiency, while recommended PSU will give 80%+)

+The power supply can be used in future also, even if you upgrade later to a good mid-range setup. (Good PSU's support latest connectors)

+This will safeguard system components (Recently bought a generic psu instead of Corsair CX400 for my office pc, thinking that the whole pc isnt worth as much as CX400's price. But i ended up losing a 512MB ram stick very soon.)

Can i do this for a better life???

sato1986 , DarkAngel, vip; Thanks for the inputs

harishgayatri; yes its my typo error.
Is it wise enough it PEP it up this way or is it better off getting a NEW one rather than spending this much?

The motherboard also supports PCI x16 slot, which I might be able to upgrade to some light gaming moments.
