Graphic Cards Can I store an ASUS AMD 7850 in a cabiner without the power connector

I bought an ASUS AMD 7850 over a year ago. About half a year ago it stopped working (I use on board graphics now.) I didn't use the card much so I thought I can keep it connected in the computer until nearly the end of warranty and then exchange it for another card (it has a 3 year warranty.)

Last week, the fan on the graphics card started spinning up after 6 hours of normal computer use and every time I shut down the computer, it would spin up in half an hour unless I shut down the computer overnight.

As a quick fix, I disconnected the power cable to the card. I don't have any proper storage pouch for the card so I kept it connected to the motherboard without the power cable attached. The fan has stopped spinning up. Is this safe keeping the card connected without the power cable? I can take the computer in to a computer shop for cleaning and have the graphics card replaced but it would take a few days and I can't really spare time during the week.

It's safe but is of no use and will consume additional power. But I'm still wondering keeping a card installed with power cable and using motherbord's onboard VGA instead did not show you any error sign. Do post your complete pc spec.

@Chaos: The shop that built my computer has the box and pouch that the card came in so I don't have the materials to pack up the card plus the couriers where I'm at (Kochi) don't accept electronics for shipping out. I'll hand in the card to the shop that built the computer for them to handle the replacement.

otherwise put the card inside a thick poly cover, wrap it with bubble wrap. cover it with thermocole all around. Place this inside a thick carton/box. You can mail this in a lined/clothed envelope for RMA. Hope this helps!

Seriously, it has a 3 yr warranty and you are wasting it keeping inside the cabby...isnt it foolish!!!???

Give it for rma and you'll get a better replacement than doing it more damage keeping connected to your mobo for no obvious reasons.

If you keep it connecting and if the fan spins occasionally, there are chances it might get damaged in this scenario internally and may be some minor burning as well which may go unnoticed and till its very late. Then you may blame yourself that inspite having a warranty you wasted it all.

I gave the card in for replacement last night. I don't really game anymore, the card was bought for crypto mining.

Ok good. So lets see whether you get a 7850 in replacement or which other card. And if you are planning to sell it, let me know. Just asking coz you dont game anymore.
