For some time my motorola defy show erratic behaviour while charging. Sometimes it wouldn't charge beyond 1%, and sometimes it would charge very slowly (like 30% in 12 hours). I thought the battery was dead until I connected the phone to the computer and it got charged normally. So I concluded it was a problem with the USB adapter charger.

I really need to get a new one, and I'm thinking of getting a universal one on ebay. Please recommend to me what to buy.

Meanwhile, can I charge my phone with the iPad charger?

My iPad charger says : 5.1 V == 2.1 A
My Defy charger says : 5.1 V == 850 mA

Please dont use the Ipad charger.

The output of the Ipad charger is greater than then your defy charger. I might damage the battery . As far I know the Output rating should be same.

Let others also have a say.

should not be a problem, the phone should draw only the no of amps it needs. The computers's usb provides somewhere around 350-500mA and still can be used to charge the phone.

You can use it as long as output voltage is same. It's always better to get a higher amp rating charger( Device always drive no of amps it needs but will be constrained by maximum amp rating of charger)
I use my ipod charger with Atrix 2.

Now,All smartphones/tablets have the same mini USB port as their charging terminal
If you iPad has the same charging port then you can use it

I'm using just one charger for my Playbook + Moto Defy + Galaxy Nexus
Never had issues,infact my defy charges fast when i use my BB playbook's charger rathen using the moto charger
