Just came across a P3 1 GHz machine and was wondering whether i can power this upto a download rig.The config is as follows.

1: Pentium 3 @ 1 Ghz
2: SD Ram 133 Mhz 128MB
3: Gigabyte GA-6VMM mobo
4: 80gb PATA HDD

My requirements:
1.Download rig with 2(might be 3) copies of XP Professional(original, not some watered down version) running -using VMware.
2.Should be networked with my main PC to facilitate moving the downloaded data to it at the end of the day.

If i am to upgrade the RAM to 2gbSDR 333 or so, will i be able to change this dying thing to my desired download rig? Will the proccy let me down once the ram arrives?

Regards

Yeah...it'll do nicely for a download rig.
Though I don't know why you want to install xp and vmware. And why do you want to have 3 copies installed?
Use linux instead. It'll run quite well on that rig, won't be as prone to viruses as a windows based system, and best of all you won't need to invest in RAM for a system thats EOL anyway.

^^ Thanx mate..so, i assume its safe to get couple GBs of SDRAM for the system.

and abt the multiple installation of OS: I have 2 x BSNL EVDO connections which i connect simultaneously using 2 copies of OS and vmware.

I don't see much point is using the system as the download rig , Its going to be a power hog , slow and the extra RAM you ll add is going to be quite expensive i think .

Get an ATOM based setup for peace of mind .

You could but not probably worth all the hassles. Like Uday said, the Atom board is the best and cheapest solution. Runs WHS without a fuss. :D

RAM is going to be uber expensive. My suggestion would be, install some very light weight linux OS or a stripped down version of XP or Win2K even.

Add the min amount of ram required for you to use , no need to go overboard even just 1gb of ram should be sufficient for your requirements. Use it till it kicks the bucket and then take a call.

It wont be a power hog.

But add good amt of RAM.

I dont think 2GB will be supported max to max must be 1GB and that too is doubtful.

Redbull....I meant use it as a download rig WITHOUT adding more RAM....that's why I suggested using Linux instead of XP.

But if you intend to use virtualization, this rig is going to be seriously underpowered...and not worth reviving.
