So guys i ve noticed that a year after release the card prices usually drop as it has happened in the mid-range segment in the past (8800's and 4850's) where the prices took a good 3-4k drop below from their 10k+ initial prices, now i want to jump for a 5 series card but i am not sure if this is a right time.
I have seen how disappointing it can get when something u buy tends to get a substantial price drop/updated model release like in the case of my frnd who got a PS3 phat a mnth before the slim was announced or another instance where my frnd got a 4850 for ~10k but the prices were down in a couple of weeks. Since the 5 series will be hitting their anniversary soon (August-September) can i expect a price drop and wait for the deal to get better or just get it now ?
pls post ur opinions

Id say...the prices will come down...a bit..
when the nvidia mainstream launches...

till now the smallest member of the fermi is the GTX465..which is a high end card..
when the mainstream fermi launch there will be a price fall..
unless, they are priced way above the current ati cards...same case as HD5850 and HD 5870...
there prices dint come down as the GTX480,470 were priced way over them...so there was no need for a cut..

the upcoming GF104 series cards from nvidia might bring down the price of 5850 and 5770.it all depends on how good the new cards perform.

Oh god!!! I am planning to buy an HD 5770 tomorrow & I just can't wait anymore. I don't think a 5830 would come down to 10k any soon so guess I'm gonna go as planned.

^lol.i ordered a msi 5770 about 4 hours ago at a nearby shop.upgrading from a 7200gs:ohyeah: i am tired of waiting and hence decided to go for the deal.

^ ditto . i gt a hawk for myself just a couple o' days back ! was waiting for the price drop since 2 mnths ! just get what you want stop worrying about price drops !

Even I am waiting for a decent drop in the HD 5850's Pricing.

I game at HD resolutions ( 1920 x 1080 ) so a 5770 doesnt fit the Bill.

Hope it comes soon.

Same here, but i have the patience to wait for the 2nd gen DX 11 cards, its not too far :P Q4 is like 3 months away

Lol u are looking for a cheaper solution in the next gen already ?
it would be more sensible to get a 5850 then since it might get a drop if new cards are launched.

more likely to be q1 2011 .... i got my 5850 sapphire in feb and the prices have still not come down ... infact the prices here locally are still above the price i got it from TheItwares in feb. As far as price drop goes ... the GTX 465 was supposed to priced below HD5850 and perform about the same ... but that didnt work out as planned ... so unless nvdia has good something that competes well with the 5850 at a lesser price point ... or drops the price of the GTX 470 i dont belive ati will be forced to cut prices .... At its price point the HD5850 is the king unless this position changes there is not going any price cuts within the next couple of months.

+1. More than the time frame. It depends on when Nvidia releases a good main stream solution. If nvidia has a card that can outperform 5850 at less/equal price, then the prices will go down. But then Fermi has heat and power consumption issues. There is not much that nvidia can do with Fermi at 40nm to address these issues. Hopefully Fermi's successor with a die shrink will address these issues and be much more competitive. Come on nvidia we need competition and hence price cuts.

Well if some leaked slides are to be believed than ATI's Northern Islands is due in Q1 2011, depending upon competition and fabrication process it might bring down DX11 GPU prices by quite a bit.
