Recently found 3 reallocated sectors on my old rma'd hdd. with hdd prices still at 4500 for a 500Gb hdd, this is a bad time for a hdd to start showing its age. and to top it, the warranty runs out in june 2012.

So besides checking the hdd status everyday, can we predict its life span? whenever i see reallocated sectors, i get a feeling it will not be long before i start seeing bad sectors on my drive. then again, one of my wd hdd has just 1 reallocated sector and its running fine from 3 years.

so can we predict time before hdd fails?

^ can't predict, HDDs can ditch you anytime. My suggest, backup and RMA before warranty expiries

almost 400Gb to backup. also sea tools does not run in windows. some fatal error dialogue before it terminates. extremely useless software. had to download and install dot net 4 for it to run which was around 100Mb including all new patches and it wont run.

should i get a 2Tb hdd? price for 2Tb at 8.5K seems much better compared to that of 1Tb and 500Gb which retail for 6+K and 5K respectively.

^ That is precisely the reason i never go beyond 500GB size.

Consider urself lucky that u noticed it in time and the hdd is still holding out.. else you would have been in a tight spot.

My personal experience has shown that higher capacity drives fail more often. I have RMAed 2TB, 1TB and 500GB drives for self and friends numerous times now.

But my 40GB and 80GB drives that are 7-8 years old are still running without issues. This is just my observation though, pls don't ask me to prove it!

Depends on how one uses it. Those who torrent are more prone to hard disk failures than others.

This is my observation since the torrenting causes prolonged simultaneous read/write sessions for long time with reduced speed.

That isn't true. Me and my friends use torrents during night. But our hard disks are still very much alive.

There are two guys that I know. One of them use local hubs for downloading and his all hard disks are RMA'd. Another one is total nuts. He constantly installs new OS. His hard disks too are replaced many times.
