Today I had installed Linux Mint on another drive and it is working quite well. But whenever I try to boot xp nothing happens and again the grub screen reopens
Please someone provide a solution as though I am quite comfortable with linux but my father wants to use xp and it is easier for him to work on it

IIRC you can repair your current XP, by repairing it.
# Boot from the XP installation media
# at first screen prompt, choose repair by pressing R
# next choose your XP partition and enter your administrative password if any
# next type "fixboot" and press enter
# type "exit" and restart the PC

I guess you will get your XP , regarding the linux, i am not an expert but i suggest you to install it inside windows itself. if not wait for the linux gurus :)

Try adding "drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)" to your Windows XP entry in grub.cfg (minus the double quotes). I'm not sure what version of grub you are using, but if it is recent enough, this command should be supported. Windows XP has trouble booting from a non-first hard disk. For more details on drivemap - GNU GRUB Manual 1.99
