Isn't it Ubuntu + Android in one ? Above it is written android + android.
Also any information about whether they will care to update the android OS when new iterations of the same arrive or one will have to go for custom ROMs ?

Yup its a typo from my side. Its ubuntu + android. It will run the latest iteration of android. How often it will be updated is not specified but ubuntu will get monthly updates.

What's guaranteeing the end product will be "Awesome" ? Is there a clause to get returns on their profits? If no then shove off. Bad investment.

I would not put money now in such things, after it comes to market and is a success then it makes sense, that too after evaluating everything.
Like Pebble smart watch started as Kickstarter but later became mainstream gadget available in stores (in USA).

Well there is no clause as such but a backer could return the product if not satisfied within 30 days. In the event that the target of 32 million is not achieved, canonical will concentrate on commercially available devices.
