Hi everyone,
I am in the process of deciding the components for my new pc. I can't decide on the processor :S - AMD or Intel. I thought i would go for the amd athlon 64 3500+ proc for its performance. but it seems to be quite pricy after looking at the price guide here. Or i could get the P4 630 LGA775 which is quite impressive in performance compared to the a64 3500+. also p4 630 is much cheaper compared to amd 64 3500+
this review has me even more confused as to which to choose. can u guys help?

the above link is a direct comparison between amd 64 3500+ and pentium 630 and pentium d processor on the basis of programs loaded etc.

seems like pentium 4 630 beats the hell out of a64 in multitasking.
also i am not a game freak, i may play games but only ocassionaly.

I just want to know which processor would be better for me.

I'll be using my pc for all graphics work (not 3d), and for viewing movies, listening to music, etc. So most of the time atleast 2-3 graphics programs and winamp, norton antivirus and firewall will be running simultaneously. (some of them in the background ofcourse)

awaiting your replies.:)

I don't have any first hand experience with the recent crop of intel proccys, but from what I've read (and heard), the Intel HTs are definitely better when it comes to multi-tasking and encoding related tasks

From ur reqmts, i think the p4 630 suits your needs better

However, do bear in mind that in general the current Intel HTs dissipate more heat (and run less efficiently) than comparable AMD counterparts

Ehhh, what graphics programs will you be running? Winamp, AV, and firewall dont make much diff. So whether you need the multitasking features of the pentium would depend on what graphics programs you would be running.

go with a P4 if you not going to be playing games so much.

Its MUCH better at multitasking than a normal A64...trust me

P4's are also better for encoding as well...

Dual core is another story lol

Yup...Guys, let's not be AMD fanboi's LOL :bleh:

IMHO 6pack's needs are served better by the Intel proccy he has in mind (and the corresponding budget that he has)

Dissenting opinions welcome :hap2:

OT- Kev, u got a X2....awesome... cheers to that

The P4 630 fits your need perfectly..though i think heat will be a big issue as it is wid all p4 presscys..also do you intend to Oc your cpu? I can only imagine the poor cpu fan whirring thru the roof if it is cranked up.. :P

But for normal computing in a multitasking environment, the P4 wid its HT easily beats the A64..

It all depends on your needs..

If you are into games, 3d rendering, ocing, get the A64..

If you are into encoding, using multiple applications simultaneously, get a P4 HT..

i won't be overclocking the proc. i will be using photoshop, illustrator, flash, dreamweaver, maybe a web server to run asp/php scripts.
if i buy the 630 which would be the best mobo for it? i mean something below 5000/- since i've decided on getting a 17inch lcd monitor.

or should i buy a barebone pc and put the proc in it? rash pheripherals site has some good asus barebone pc's which support the 630.

:hap2: btw thanks a lot for the response. i appreciate it. :hap2:

Don't even think about using the 630 in a barebone...even if the barebone supports a P4 630..as per intel's specifications,

the prescotts need proper ventilation(you know how hot they run..) and as such, a decent size box is a must..you can choose from various ATX cab designs available...

Btw, any particular reason for going in for the barebone??

Apart from looking good and maybe, saving some space they dont do your cpu any good as far as ventilation is concerned.

that was the reason i was interested in a barebone pc, but most of the barebones have three fans for cooling.
