Capping uTorrent speeds

I have a 384kbps Tata connection (prepaid) and uTorrent consumes all the bandwidth when downloading. Hence, I can't browse at all while uTorrent is running.

Setting limits on download speeds hasn't helped. All it does is reduce the torrent download speed without freeing up bandwidth for the browser. I've also capped my upload rate to 70% of the download rate.

This never used to be a problem with my BSNL connection. Could browse and download torrents simultaneously easily.

What should I do?

Torrents always increase latencies. and sometimes it's frustrating. With your speed, along with speed throttling, I suggest you keep maximum number of connections to 100 and don't run more than two torrents concurrently.

Solution: -

Go to Options -> Advance Settings -> Max Half Open Connections...

Set it to 4 or 5... then Apply

Now you should be able to surf while downloading using utorrent... :)

A tip.. sometimes (from my own experience) when you set upload limit as max and are seeding a lot of torrents.. the utorrent might have a network crash after which you will hav to restart the app.. this is especially irritating if you leaving the comp on throughout the night...

And for your solution just go to Options-> Preferences-> Bandwidth and set the limits accordingly ....

And i have seen some people just reducing the download speed thinking that browsing is just downloading.. which obviously is not the case...

1.Limit your global connections/Connected peers
2.Reduce utorrent download speed when browsing. It should be enough that flash files actually load without waiting for too long.
3.Upload speed also play a role. Limit it too(75% of your bandwidth?)

no offence, but none of the above will work as they are per-torrent settings.

If you right-click on the utorrent icon in the system tray, it brings up a menu where you can cap the global utorrent download (for browsing) or upload (for uploading attachments, images, videos etc in a browsing session) speed, with a choice of caps. Once you select a cap (they start at 25 kb/s) and activate the menu again, it will show a further set of possible numbers. The initial numbers start at 25, which is about the speed of a 256kb/s connection, so you will need to activate the menu twice for connection speeds slower than that.

Edit: What he said ^^

For customizing those upload/download caps, go to Preferences->Advanced->User Interface and see the upload/download speed list. 0 means Unlimited...

my isp gives 4:1 which means if I have 2mbps I see 200 download and 50 upload .... how can I do capping on utorrent unless my isp changes the download/ upload ratio?

We are talking about capping the download - upload speeds and not the ratio

I think now I get it, if there are more seeders to a particular content, but less demand (very less leachers) then even though I have a 1:1 from my ISP 125 KB/sec download and 125 KB/sec, I will see that much download is happening than upload.

Hence by capping we make sure that the ratio requirement of the private tracker is being met.

Why not use "Netlimiter" You can limit the up and down values as per your need.. And no intereference with Utorrent or for that matter any apps..

I am using it since last year or so and it works like charm..

your isp doesnot control ur torrent transfer ratios.
the torrent tracker decideds it

follow the above mentioned solutions regarding half open connections...if that doesnt help..
the go through the following to manually cap ur speeds...

set max uLoadSpeed = 1kBps n determine the ratio.
for 1kBps uLoad limit... if suppose u get x kBps speed...

let d = x+1

384kbps = 48kBps

let necessary browsing speed = y
8kBps would be enough for browsing...(increase according to ur needs)

therefore..

set uload speed limit for torrent = uLoadLimit = (48-y)/(x+1)

Lolz... This is a typical problem with utorrent... Max Half Open connection setting is the definite solution...

OP has trouble surfing if utorrent is running (downloading)... Its not about limiting the bandwidth... :P

^^
Actually i used to face same problem, when i was on 256kbps conn, as in utorrent would max out 32Kb/s and surfin would suffer. So i used NETLIMITER to limit my Utorrent to 25 and that made quite a difference..Well now that i am on 2mbps, i use it for balancing my utorrent and IDM downloads..

I guess OP was looking for that only, If not then seems like I misinterpreted the post again :)

Frenz,

I am using TATA Indicom WiMax connection and I am facing Utorrent port error problem. Some guys told me to contact customer care to open ports as some ports are blocked by the ISPs. And CC guys said

""Sir, your IP has been caped. Please avoid downloading for 10 days and then your port error problem will be solved"

Is this the correct solution or the TATA CC guys doing Time pass.

Give your reviews frenz.
