Hi

Just bought my first android - captivate. Its on firmware 2.2 build froyo.uckb1 baseband i897uckb1 and kernel ver 2.6.32.9.

I wish to install samsung galaxy s i9000 gingerbread stock samsung rom on this. So, downloaded firmware I9000DDJV9 ## 2.3.3 2011 July

I9000ODDJV9

from sammobile.

Used clockworkmod recovery. Booted by holding vol up down and power. Did back up, reistall package, factory reset, partition wipe and update from zip.

It gave message opening file..installing..

After that it just seemed to get stuck. Half an hour passed and nothing happened.

What have I done wrong. Pls advise. Fortunately, I removed the battery botted into clockwork and restored.

Thanks

^It surely is, go to xda and go through the stickies in Captivate Android Development section to learn about basic know-hows on performing a flash on you phone.

You can not just zip files randomly and try flashing them through CMW. The zip rom files we see have some particular system, bin, meta-inf folders/files, which consist the modem, kernel etc of the phone. And i am not too sure but you can only install Galaxy S i9000's firmware onto your phone if its kernel is compatible to captivate. What i mean is, you need to have a JVT kernel installed, after you're done with a JVT rom, before giving your phone a boot. Failing to which can give you boot loops.

Now what you can do this, if you can go to download mode my key shortcuts. Then,

- Download and install drivers for your phone on your PC.

- Download and install the stock 2.1 or 2.2 firmware on your PC.

- Use Odin to mount the firmware you just downloaded.

- Get to the download mode on your phone and connect it to your pc via usb cable.

- If drivers are prolerly installed, ODIN will detect your phone.

- Flash the stock firmware.

- Your phone should boot to the stock firmware if everything is done properly.

Now to have 2.3.x roms on your phone.

- Download the Rom you want to have on your phone. Place it on you SD card.

- Download Gingerbread bootloader from xda on your pc. There should be a ODIN file for this on xda.

- Open the file and you will see the same interface as seen while installing stock fw.

- Again get your phone into download mode and install gb bootloaders.

- Let the phone reboot.

- Root your phone via SuperoneClick or any other method you feel appropriate.

- Download and install Rom Manager from from market.

- Flash Clockwork Mod recovery from ot.

- Boot into CWM recovery and install the zip rom you have on your sd card.

- Reboot and you're done!

The availability of stock GB ROM in Odin compatible format can provide some ease too. Go through XDA before performing anything unknown unless you want to have a bricked slate in your hands.

First...

Why are you trying to flash SPECIFIC i9000 ROM's?

There are tons of them out there for the captivate itself.

And TWO,

Try the ICS RC2 build (Demonwav one, by OneCosmic) Super stable.

have been using it for the past 1 month.

Hi and thanks

I have stock froYo rooted. I have got totally confused with the plethora of roms and information at xda. Cud u suggest me a good gb rom which includes voodoo.

Go to the Captivate Android Development section at xda, and lookout for a Rom as per your needs. I have been on MIUI since last 2 months now, so I have no idea about the current scene of GB roms. The last I was using was Apex and Fusion.

After you give a try to these GB Roms, also look for Galnet MIUI. I recommend it to all my friends on grounds of stability and looks.

@ Gauge

Thanks. I got a guide for this. Now can u tell me what is this ext4 and rfs. How do I know wether I am on ext4 or rfs.

ext4 and rfs are partition systems. all new GB custom roms use the ext4 partition systems, while the older 2.1 custom and stock roms use rfs. Some CM7 and MIUI roms also use rfs system. I guess, you do no need to worry much about what system you are on. but still if you want to know on what system you are, then there is an app in the market for this purpose, i dont remember its name. search 'ext4' in the market.

+1 to What gauge said... "You can not just zip files randomly and try flashing them through CMW"

Further you can't just flash any i9000 frimware on captivate, the kernel needs to be re-oriented for captivate.

Best is to choose a firmware which is designed for or successfully ported to captivate.

Enjoy your cappy.

To flash a i9000 ROM, yuu need to have the i9000 bootloader if i am not wrong.. Flashing bootloaders is a dangerous process since you can hard brick the phone while doing so. Moreover, Odin is one cranky software.

This thread has the list of all stock ROMS. Chose a GB one, prefeably a Heimdall One-Click rather than one that needs to be flashed with Odin. Boot into download mode and flas the ROM. Should take 2 - 3 mins. Then flash a custom kernel like the Boog's kernel to get CWM. After that, you can flash any of the GB ROM's in the development section through CWM.

Try Illuminance 3.0.1. Thats the best GB ROM out there for me. Well, after MIUI

Edit:

This Thread has detailed info on how to flash a GB rom. While flashing GB rom for the first rom, select one which includes bootloaders.

Tried OneCosmic's ICS 4.0.3 RC 2.11 yesterday. The Rom was quiete good but had few bugs. It was really to use a normal Rom after getting used to MIUU, so again gave some to my phone and flashed back to MIUI.

MIUI FTW!

MIUI 4.0 new version is out. Will test it in an hour. Had incoming calls problem in the previous versions. Hope it is resolved now. Teamhacksungs Build 13 is really goos and stable. Try it. I feel its better than the Onecosmic one. But yeah, nothing beats MIUI.

Can you provide me with a link for the same?

All the CM7 based ROMs I tried had problem with video playback whereas the i9000 based ROMs offer super smooth video playback.
