Calling all car lovers who love to drive..
i have a question in mind.
while travelling downward slope and if you just change to neutral does it affect brakes while braking??
my dad says that sometimes brakes fail if u drive in neutral while going downward slopes..
so i was wondering and tried that many times still can brake properly while travelling down slope..
also give some tips on gears if anyone knows more. :D

Eh, it certainly does not. Not on any car i have driven. Lol maybe your dad dont want you to try something silly :P

Breaks are there to do 1 thing. STOP THE CAR.

And that means be it in gear or in neutral.

my dad said.. let the petrol burn.. but dont drive in neutral while going down the slope cause is said some reason like brake oil or something i didnt remember. but 1 thing is in neutral car goes down faster then when in a gear :bleh: so i enjoy driving in neutral

Brakes will never fail but the fact is I'd never be in neutral for more than a fraction of a second when the car is in motion no matter at what speed :P.

Being in gear allows u to have a control on speed better. Once u shift from gear to neutral clutch will have no effect on speed.

Best way is to be in gear and use the clutch and the break in tandem to control speed.

Ur dad is right if this is what he meant. And petrol will burn, be in neutral or in gear... ;)

but I heard you travel by auto ? :P

Use same gear going downhill which you would have used taking the same slope uphill.. ie , if you go up that particular slope in 2nd gear ( which u need to judge ), you gotta go downhill in second gear as well. This reduces the amount of retarding force to applied by the brakes themselves.

Never go downhill in neutral (or with the clutch enganged for that matter :P), wears off the brakes really fast, failing would take some time ;)

When in neutral, your car will start rapidly developing speed on a down-hill slope cause of the car's weight + gravity. As a result most people tend to 'ride' the brakes i.e. gently applying the brakes. Since the friction is continuous between the brake pads <-> wheel without the wheel actually coming to a stop, the brake pads tend to heat up - this can cause premature wearing out of the brake pads.

When you're in gear on the other hand, the speed is controlled by the engine's RPM - basically an effect known as engine braking. So if you're running the engine at a constant speed/RPM, the speed with which you move down the slope is constant as well without you having to use the brakes.

Another aspect i've noticed (atleast on Marutis) is that braking is assisted by engine power, if you switch to neutral there will be loss in power-assisted braking and you would need more effort to brake.

my dad said same thing that it harms brakes also :bleh:
and the mod i like ur explaination too. thx guyzzzzzzzzzzzz

well i stay in gangtok.. which is a hill station....

dont ever do that... going downhill in neutral... 1 of my frns frm plains was doing thats..in esteem..new at that time.... the front brake pads caught fire..the car was stopped by handbrakes...n we had to put lots of water..to cool the brakes..... and yes.... stay in the gear it required to climb the incline

@Hummer!! ur right man.. i even see F1 cars disc brake in red when they apply brakes.. i drive esteem too at steep slopes of altamount road :P

yup your right :)

DON"T EVER DO THAT!

I REPEAT- DOn't ever do that

It may be OK to do that at speeds less than 40kmph...and even then, your brake wear is going to be a lot more than normal....

Also, it's not a question of brake failure,,,,,

Anything above 40 and plain usage of brakes without the accompanying engine braking is going to increase your stopping distance by a big margin!!

And when you are going at 80 or 100kmph, a few meters can make the difference between a safe stop and disaster

Bang on ... also the only possibility of brakes not being effective, is if you have switched the ignition off and running in neutral to save some fuel, and the car has power brakes...you have to put in much more effort to brake
