The CD writer on one of the the PCs in my office has gone berserk! IBm, P III 800, 256 SD Ram, running Win XP SP2. here's how it goes : I close the tray, it comes out, I close the tray, it..u get my drift! It sometimes pops out even while I'm burning !N mind u, some days it behaves like a dream. What's up? No virus detected...Send it for servicing?

There was one software I remember which used to do this.
It was a prank software wherein the cd tray pops in and out anytime.

try installing the drive in some other pc and then check... if still probs then servicing.

yeah i still have tht software smwhere in my harddisk..it was really cool at tht time to open up the cd drive of any pc of the school comp lab connected on lan..it was damn fun we had then..:D

You might have been infected with netbus trojan or subseven trojan or/and leaving wide open on port 135 to 137 of NetBios.

Best suggestion is to go to Housecall Trendmicro Online AV Scanner and let the website go thru your IE browser only to scan for trojans and viruses. I will also suggest running microsoft antispyware/spybot/adaware and also with an upto date antivirus.

How about this

I remember back at my school for a few months there was this interesting icon on the taskbar. I decided to investigate by right clicking and going properties. There was a list of all the cd-rom drives containing stuff like encarta etc inside the server computers. "How interesting" I thought.

Anyway I decided to right click one of the cd-roms, and what do you know - it had an eject button. :D I right clicked on all the cd-roms and went eject, then quickly got out of there. I did not know if my little trick had worked or not because I was in a different part of the school.

Another day I was in the computer room during class (server room nearby), and I decided to try again. I right-clicked again and ejected the 5 cd-rom drives. Then quickly logged off and went away from the computers. One moment later, the techie who was in the server room rushes out and over to a group of computers where I had been working and starts blaming my friend for doing something. Another teacher walks over, and the techie exclaims "I was just in the server room, and all the cd drives started opening and closing!". :^O rofl! I was trying my best not to laugh and give myself away. My friend was adamently saying he didn't know anything, but practically got the blame for it anyway. lol. Later, the techie found out what the problem was and disabled the icon. What a laugh though.
If everything is clean, then it may be time for getting a new one....:D

The best way of finding whether it is a software fault or hardware fault is as follows.
The next time ur cdwr starts acting funny as mentioned above. switch off the m/c, disconnect the flat ribbon cable (not the power cable) and restart the m/c. then insert a cd and post back your observations here.
