I have this Sony vaio laptop and there is one setting where the laptop charging stops at 80%. I think I had read somewhere that this is beneficial for the battery. I don't have much idea about all this. So want to know whether I should continue using this setting and charge my laptop till 80% or turn this off and let it charge fully till 100% ?

That is applicable only if you keep the laptop plugged in all the time, which is stupid.

The best way to maximise battery life is to charge fully (even whle working), unplug until battery empties, and recharge again. I did this on a Macbook Pro for a year and am doing the same with my Asus laptop for the last 8 months, and in both cases I have not lost even one minute of battery life. Ditto for all my phones. I have stretched a Nokia N8's battery - 5 years on it still gives me 4 days' standby. I simply follow the 'charge when empty, discharge when full' to get the maximum number of charge cycles out of a battery.

That is correct if you were to hold the battery voltage at 4.2V. IMO, the correct way to charge a Li-ion is to top up, disconnect the charger, and discharge it with use. My understanding is that the 0% and 100% point set by the battery and device manufacturer includes the reserve capacity needed to preserve the battery lifetime.

The worst thing you can do to a battery is keep it connected to the wall after reaching full charge. That reduces lifetime more than any other thing.

My laptop has a battery management software, in which if i select best battery health , the battery charges to 60%and then runs on ac power....

I have a Vaio too.
I have selected to charge upto 50% only.
Since my Laptop is always connected to power source, it charges till 50% and then it is powered by AC power. Sony recommends it for extending battery life, if your laptop is always connected to power source.

Dell's Laptop technician told me that the battery when plugged in, is always charging even if 100% charged. Best way is to remove the battery when the desired level is reached & if you want to move around just put it in. No need to shutdown.

some tips i read a while ago when my lappy was brand new..
..
you should drain your battery completely once a fortnight or a month for a better battery backup for a long run.. there was some explanation given with respect to cells that i don't remember..
also when your battery is new you gotta give it full charge and discharge cycles.. again i dont remember its cellular description
