Trimmers and shavers are different things.
That said you can cut the hair close with a trimmer as well, just remove the guard. Make sure it's a beard trimmer otherwise you risk getting a cut.

I first bought Nova few yrs ago and for first year it worked good but later on battery hold time suddenly dropped to all time low. Finally it gave up.
