hi guys,
For some high-perf simulations, I want to build a quad core which can take upto 16GB ram (can afford only 4GB now). No graphics card needed. I *may* do overclocking, very well within safety limits.
Will be running Linux - if that's a factor with some motherboards.

Also, I would appreciate advice on which power supply wattage + fan should I use if I have 4 hard disks.

Please make it as cheap as possible.

Thanks in advance!

1. You didn't mention whether you need only cpu or entire rig.

2. Try following format for asking help regarding rig

3. You did not mention your budget either.

Processor: Athlon II X4 620 - 5.3k

Mobo : Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H - 5.9k

RAM: Transcend 2x2GB DDR3 1333MHz - 5.2k

HDD: Seagate 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series- 2.4k

Cabinet: Zebronics Bijli ATX - 1.1k

SMPS: Gigabyte Superb 460W - 2.2k

Optical Drive: L.G. GH22NS30 SATA/Samsung SH-S22F SATA - 1.1k

Speakers: Altec Lansing 2.1 BXR1121 - 1.1k

Monitor: Benq G2220HD 22" - 8k

Keyboard: Samsung Pleomax - .2k

Mouse: Logitech Optical - .4k

Total : 32k

16GB Ram ...huh..for what man????

For the spice simulations - 8GB has been passe for a very long time in the EDA industry.

Great config.. thanks man.
I will be dropping the optical drive (will install linux using USB + no possibility of movies), no speakers, cheap-ass keyboard and mouse. I am assembling this for work purposes.
I also may opt for western digital because I read about its better after-sales.

Processor: Athlon II X4 620 - 5.3k
Mobo : Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H - 5.9k
RAM: Transcend 2x2GB DDR3 1333MHz - 5.2k
HDD: 2 X Western Digital 500GB SATAII 7200.12 series- 4.8k
Cabinet: Zebronics Bijli ATX - 1.1k
SMPS: Gigabyte Superb 460W - 2.2k
Monitor: Any 17-19" - 6k
keyboard+mouse: 500

I have two questions - if I will have 4X HDD and 16GB RAM, is the SMPS still good enough? Is the stock cooler good enough for this ?

thanks!

One other question - according to Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H PCSTATS Review - Motherboard Benchmarks: Sysmark 2007, Sandra 2009 , should I be going for MSI 785GM-E65 ?

Is it cheaper than the Gigabyte ... and easily available in Delhi ?

:)

affordability != capacity.

In a year's time, 16GB wont look expensive - but I wont want to upgrade my motherboard then.

Guys, some advice on motherboards - cheapest with all these features ? and SMPS...

Change HDD to 1 tb Western Digital - 4k

Keep monitor Benq G2200 HD - 8k .

Its hardly 1k more than any 19" monitor

cant do that - to run our simulations we need two different kind of files to be read in parallel. It is better to have two hard disks, rather than one.

Moreover, if we move to Solaris - we would be configuring RAIDZ mirror. Cant get a big size screen cos, we dont have much space where we work. Ideally, I would get a 15 in display.

I'm more worried about motherboard and SMPS.
