Graphic Cards Cheap mod on 7800GTX .... reduced temps ~20*c

Rahul

Forerunner
unavailability of nvsilencer forced me to do modding kooling of mine GTX ..... i just put AMD 64 HS's fan onto the HS of GTX and its damn good ..... now max temps i got is 58*c ...... before it goes 80-82 while playing BF2 of NFS MW ...idle temps are like 40-43 before it was 50-52

here are some pics of the mod....

but the problem is noise of fan it is too high ..... thing is if i start the Q fan then fan RPM drops to 1800 and if i switch it off it goes to 5600RPM ..... and there is no fan speed controller in the provided ASUS software(damn mine MSI Neo PE is having kool fan controller) i think i have to use speedfan have't used it so it wud take some time to getting used to ...... but i will suggest every one to do this mod ..... its really cheap and effectve

nope i didn't used the screws .... i don't want to screw the HS :) .... i used double sided tapes ..... i am using it on mine 6600GT which has same mod with a thermaltake fan which is too much heavy than this AMD one .... and that thing is working fine from 6 months so i think it will fine on this ......

aren't you worried that it might just plonk out(cuz of tape) & damage some critcial components.
also, is the tape, heat resistant(thermal tape), if not wont the temp near the heatsink side be enuf to damage the tape.

Yeah rahul this is a definite risk. The glue on the tape will disappear soon due to heat and the fan might fall off.

thats right but still its working on mine 6600GT from 6 months and when i tried removing that fan ...... it taken considarable effort to take it off ..... anyway for precaution i have set a thershold temps as 90*c in rivatuner ....

this is just for the time being i willl get a Nvsilencer as soon as it is available .... also i need some ram sinks ..... i think i will come to mumbai to get the things ..... in dec or jan .....

Great mod Rahul !

But better find a way to keep the HSF in place securely...

And yeah, you sure have guts to rip off the fan from a $500 card ;)

Rahul just use the original fan as well, as a safety precausion.

Mod your card bios with fan speed at say 20-30% only so it will be very slow. Main cooling job will be done by the mod, but just in case something happens to this fan the original fan will keep cooling. at low speeds.

Hmmmm ........ u guys are really scaring me :) ..... i have taken off the fan and fitted the original fan ..... now i am waiting for the nvsilencer ..... problem is if i fit the both fan together both will be having airflow on different direction i am afraid that one might get damaged ......

pour feviquik on the double side tape n stick...will be tough to remove :P but its sure the fan will not fall off

tie-wrap is a nice idea ...... but i think mine tape thing is also ok ..... lets see i may be put is back after the exam ..... don't have much time now ...... have lab exam tomorrow .......

Rahul nice mod man....just be careful with the sticky tape used.....it isn't permanent....
And once again...GR8 u are one of the few pioneers here in India.....

PS- I think your next upgrade should be an X2.....;)

Hey Vandal,

You gotta check out some of Sunny's mods. He is the original mad-modder of TE. But now, that is under threat from Rahul. :P

I can challenge them but unfortunately beileve in buying the best stock items without any OC'ing etc.....
For example I have a P180 and the only mod was to replace the 120mm fan @ the top (under the grill top back)....with a red colored 120mm part...This looks super cool @ night...with the lights off.......
But sadly that's the only 'mod' I've done.....and I plan for the hyper 48....which well won't be a mod......
I also never OC....only my P4 is running on a 207.5 FSB which gives it 3.32GHz, when the stock is 3.2...That is the max OC I have done.....
So probably 90% of all TE members will be better overclockers than me.....I'm not really a believa....but I can cheer for the guys that do.....
