I want to buy a tablet for a friend.

He needs it for reading books, doing a bit of browsing, media consumption, playing a few games

I came upon these Chinese tablets on eBay. It is selling for Rs. 3,400

Can anyone comment on this item?

Also, can anyone give me alternatives?

I know I'm going to get poor battery life/hardware.

But, my friend does not have budget more than 3K. He just wants to be able to read books & watch/hear bit of media.

If he could play some games it would be bonus but not compulsory feature.

BSNL Penta tabs are also good. Check those. Around 4.5K after some coupons. Do not go for ultra cheap tablets - you'll regret later.

There is a 701R version of BSNL which runs android 2.3 but is cheaper. Around 4-4.5K.

Any idea about this?

how Are these BSNL tablets better than epad/apad? Better battery? Both run Android 2.3.

I seem to have settled on BSNL penta 701C. It is running android ICS 4.0.3.

Has capacitive touch, 4GB storage, 3000 mah battery, 7" screen.

Is this the best tablet for Rs. 4600 right now?

I don't want to go on a higher budget than 4500-4600 rupees.

Kindly advice.

Note. - My friend has never used android before. Will he need to "root" this device in order to install software for free? Is it advisable to root the device or should he stay with the operating software provided as is?

you don't to root for using free or paid software unless the app mentions that it requires root such as titanium backup pro etc...

I'm ordering this 701c tablet.

Hopefully it will turn out OK for the price I am paying.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on android as my friend has never used android and neither have I. :/

Should I install some other flavour of android once I get the tablet or will the existing ICS 4.0.3 will be best?
