I live in a college hostel and I use a wireless router for my Tata Photon+ connection.

Everyday there will be 3-4 outages which lasts about 2-3 minutes as the generator starts working immediately.

The power consumption of the router is only about 15W, so I need some cheap UPS for this.

Please recommend a solution.

i was providing this solution to many people .. (i never used it for my self lol)
it consists of 2 pieces one charger + ac to dc converter , and a battery

charger unit is made by local electrician (in kerala) it has 2 A transformer to charge battery ,( u can use 4 AH or 7.5 AH depending on how much backup u need, 7 AH gives 6-7 hrs on BSNL Wifi router) when AC mains is there relay cuts battery o/p from modem and battery will be charging . when AC mains goes of relay will be off and power comes from battery..

local electrician charges 500 for unit that support one device , gives one year warranty for it.
7.5 AH battery will cost u 500-500( 1 yr warranty) .. may be cheaper for lesser warranty , but go for 1 yr warranty one.

disadvantage is if it has to drive 2 device .. modem + wifi router this wont do..
he need to use 4 A transformer and for this he will charge more , i am yet to see he made one of these..
to be frank price he quotes is on higher side and its due to he has to source raw materials from retail shop. and promised to bring down cost if order comes in big num.

power comm UPS i use and another one my frnd uses shutdown after 30 mts as it senses load to determine it should be on or off

does Numeric has same issue?

wat would be back up

^^ Numeric UPS comes with only one year warranty, AFAIK. (delta's web page confirms the same)

You can get a 600VA ICE (brand name :P) UPS for 1.5k with two years on site warranty.

get a cheaper one assembled for you at a electricals shop .. or an inverter shop.

no need to experiment too much IMO.

A DIY UPS seems to be a good and cheap solution like the one blackprince posted. Consult a electronics repair shop if you're willing to spend some time else a UPS is a readymade solution.

Yes..Numeric one will shutdown if their isn't enough load.. I have POV now (it doesn't switch off by itself) but after only 1 year of use battery backup is like 5 mins for computer, so you decide :).. MY suggestion would be to buy one with the maximum warranty(and offcourse which doesn't switch off by itself :P)

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

But as others have posted if I get a UPS will it shutdown cause the load is less? Which are the ones which do NOT shutdown. And do you get any UPS cheaper than 1.5k?

Anyway as I'll check at a local electronics shop and see if they can make a mini UPS. :)

if your need is 3-5 mts.. UPS wont be an issue

even if load check is there, it runs for 15-20 mts (atleast)

but its a concern for ppl like me. who has laptop and power is not there for half a day.
