Will a Pentium G620 on H61 with GTX460 be ok for BF3? Or will a Core i3-2100 will help significantly?

i3 costs twice as much and if not way better than G620, not necessary for me as rig is primarily for BF3/gaming but only for a few months, till Ivy arrives.

Uncle-log, please help.

hehehehe still at it huh bro ? .. i bet this and that sff build is keeping you up at night now
<

i just feel the i3 will be better but but how much is the question..i think it should be playable on both though
<

Did you already get that pentium chip ? I think i3 would make a good enough difference to warrant getting it. Also once you get the i3 you really wouldnt need to worry about changing it from a gaming point of view.

Thank you for your support sir.

I think we will check that too

- i am really quite keen on trying the G620 with a few mid/high-end cards if possible and then plonking in an i3 and an i5-2400 if possible and try to draw some inference.

Bikey- why not look for an used Intel Quad?

A Core i3-2100 spanks my Core i5-650 Left-Right-Centre in most daily usage scenarios.

(And i have an i5-650 running on a P7H55-M LX, that i am not kinda using anymore)

Plus the ITCH to go SandyBitch, has been long due.

Just that buying one of the good chips like i5-2500K now when prices are already so much higher and also not very far from Ivy's arrival, especially as it's not a necessity for me, didn't feel so right. )

Thanks Zloyd- i was going to buy an i5-2500K/i7-2600K anyways, just that i postponed the purchase to get the Ivy version.

Important question, what resolution will BF3 be played at?
<

Have a look here saar

The G620 should be able to play it. However, framerates do improve with HT on i3. BF3 does well with a quad core and that's what they recommend really. Also if playing MP, I believe a better CPU helps in maintaining a healthier FPS.

EDIT: So you already got it. Nice!
<
Let us know how it works out with other games as well. AFAIK the G620 is still a good chip for gaming since it's a Sandybridge CPU.

^ Thanks bugDada. I think i too understood that a bit similarly.

i3/i5 both will fare much better for sure but the i3-2100 is priced wtice as much now.

So i need to check how each chip, with a selected graphics card, performs at a given resolution?

The thing is i am having a tough time figuring out practical-minimum and worth-the-extra-paid requirements for the multiplayer, which is the primary aim for this rig.

You can help me with the i5-2400 benchies.
<

Yup the i3 is twice as much as the G series and the i5 again twice as much as the i3. But the problem is, the respective performance also scales well according to the price.
<
You know how confused I was with the i3/i5 dilemma when I was buying.

Anyways, considering the rig's sole purpose is BF3, it's better to save on what you can. Also another thing about BF3 is, the game still looks beautiful if you turn down the settings. So toning down the graphics won't be as bad. I believe it should run well on high settings at 1680x1050.

Buzz me whenever you need whatever benchies you want.

Bike for the best BF3 experience ..... or for that matter any game
<
I say go with i3 and then the extra 10k that you would have spent on a K series processor I say put that into a monster gpu. So if your gpu budget was 15 .... now its 25
<
and that should get you a couple of 6950's from the 2nd hand market if you wanted to. But 25 ish should net you the new 7950 when it releases or nvidas 7950 competitor which is also expected soon .... I think .... well actually no one knows what nvidia is upto atm

Thanks guys for all the help.

Also, being able to borrow an i3-2100 from someoneone, seems very difficult/unlikely and buying one will be very stupid.

So will be using the i5-650+P7H55-M LX setup to guesstimate i3-2100 performance. Sounds ok?

Zloyd - Got some nonsense surprises in store for myself.

This is not permanent/long-term. I was going to buy i5-2500K+Maximus IV Gene-Z. I have just postponed the purchase till the newer equivalents arrive. That's why the hunt for cheaper stuff to survive the wait.
<

A few friends have a few 6970s and 6950s for sale and i am trying hard to resist getting one. Hopefully, i will buy a HD7970/GTX6.. or something later and want to save for that.

Heh waiting is so painful
<
But it lets you collect more pennies and get newer shinier goodies
<
On a sidenote I just want to say that maybe you should look to Nvidia for BF3 and other FPS games you will no doubt jump into when they release coz you will have beast rig, reason being it seems Ati take a longer time to fix their drivers for new releases.
