CHEAPEST LAPTOP with highest RAM...???

Hi

Can anyone suggest which is the cheapest (and best) laptop where maximum RAM is desirable and HDD may be 40 GB (HDD does not matter much). Point is Cost is to be minimised but RAM
should be somewehere around 512 MB to 1 GB.

Also suggest the laptop considering that it should have DVD writer and LCD TFT monitor along with large RAM.

WHY is HDD not important conideration as because external HDD provision through USB port is there.

SO please suggest keeping in view that COST SHOULD BE MINIMUM but must have

1. HIGH RAM
2. DVD writer3.
3. LCD TFT Monitor
4. USB Port.

Thanks and regards,

sunando

again dvd writer is also NOT that important if cost can be reduced as because it again can be connected through USB via external casing...

also although i dont know whats difference between pentium 4 and newly heard term...intel centrino mobile technology...still i would love if i can have bluetooth and centrino mobile chip in laptop....

What other type of laptop monitor is there? I have only heard of one plasma model.

Haha, I was going to comment on the same thing, but then I felt lazy to start nitpicking.
sunandoghosh, are you talking about the reflective/transreflective kind?

Hi thanks for those replies...

hey that iball link was great.... :hap2:

I am a bit hesitant in purchasing product especially laptop from companies like iball...

ALL I WANT IS

A. low cost (budget 30000rs to 40000 max a bit flexible also on higher side)

B. Option for upgrading/adding more RAM (dont mind if i have to pay extra cost for just RAM)

C. USB port

D. Intel Pentium Centrino Mobile chip (if its possible within my budget)

please advise in light of above...

thanks again for those valuable comments and links...

best regards

sunando

The cheapest centrino modls are just above 40K (Compaq/Acer/IBM)
Also. most base configurations will have 256 MB RAM and you'll need to add another 512 MB RAM Stick (~3000/-)...DVD writer also would not be a part (Typically CD r/w and DV read-only)

You can take any Acer/Compaq Celeron M Model (For ~30K) and add addl RAM in it
USB port will be there, any model u choose...

BTW I have noticed from your earlier posts that though you post adsking for advice, you promptly forget about your posts ina day or two.....Just to put in another query within a week.....
No offence meant, but asking for advice, if you don't really need it (just coz it's free advice) is I believe, unwarranted...

Haha, yeah ! What happened to the comp in BED idea ? :P

Also, the config you want will cost you atleast 90k and above, nothing below that...

Comp in Bed....wooah.....
Anyway, the config he wants won't be 90K....If he wants it really cheap. there are Pentium M 725 options (Acer/Compaq and I think even an IBM model) available from 42K ...So add say another 512 RAM (3K) and swap the DVD combo with a DVD writer...or add a USB DVD writer (dunno what the price is, say maybe 5K) and he still gets what he wants for ~50K

HI superczar

first of all thanks for that detailed reply...its truly truly appreciated man...

"most base configurations will have 256 MB RAM and you'll need to add another 512 MB RAM Stick (~3000/-)..."

I am ready to pay extra cost if its for RAM increase...infact I would be happy if RAM can increase upto 1 GB and am ready to pay for it...

"DVD writer also would not be a part (Typically CD r/w and DV read-only)"

I dont need DVD writer (if it results in extra cost)...infact I was wondering will the price be reduced if i do not opt for even CD r/w and DVD reader...???????????????? or is that we have to take that...???????

"The cheapest centrino modls are just above 40K (Compaq/Acer/IBM)"

This is again perplexing as really dont know which company's is best in terms of laptop and after sales service in India (or Kolkata)...can u please say which is best.......?????????

and yes I am ready to spend upto 45 K...

Also I believe IBM laptop is now Lenovo...Am i right...??????? (I dont want to purchase a chinese laptop...)

"You can take any Acer/Compaq Celeron M Model (For ~30K) "

I wonder what would be the speed...i mean it will be very slow...i think this celeron is corresponding laptop version of desktop version...am i right...?????????

"BTW I have noticed from your earlier posts that though you post adsking for advice, you promptly forget about your posts ina day or two.....Just to put in another query within a week..... "

I apologise for unintentionally hurting but never meant that way...I am myself very confused and at times need some time to do some research on what advice has been given...please do not take me wrong...

"No offence meant, but asking for advice, if you don't really need it (just coz it's free advice) is I believe, unwarranted"

NOT at all my dear friend...just bcz its free does not mean that i am undervaluing it or attaching any less importance that what it merits...I do understand that its a privilege and all of us are holding full time jobs and if anyone comes forward and shares his wisdom with a stranger; its more than what can even be dreamt or asked for.

So please do not ever think like that...i however assure that I shall try my best henceforth to make sure that noone feels like that based on my behaviour...asking sincerest apology once this time...

Hi

"Haha, yeah ! What happened to the comp in BED idea ? "

Although I was initially relucatnt to purchase a laptop but computer on bed does not appear to be feasible really...so forced now to think in terms of laptop...just exploring both options and almost will decide in a day or two to go for which one...ur time and help is appreciated....

IBM model for (actually Lenovo i think now) R50e has trackball and NOT touchpad and costs 42K...can anyone please say whats difference between touchpad and trackball....???????????

Again thanks for all advice...

Hi Sunando...
"most base configurations will have 256 MB RAM and you'll need to add another 512 MB RAM Stick (~3000/-)..."

I am ready to pay extra cost if its for RAM increase...infact I would be happy if RAM can increase upto 1 GB and am ready to pay for it...

Most Laptops have 2 RAM slots for 200pin RAM sticks so you can push your RAM upto 2GB....Though most peopke would not really need anything more than 1 GB

I dont want to purchase a chinese laptop...
Nearly most laptops (or for that matter cellphones/camera/handycams the list goes on) are made in china/taiwan/S Korea these days....You need not worry about the quality being poor though as most reputed manufacturers have good QC measures..whether you buy a IBM/Compaq/Dell, 9/10 times, it will be manf in China

i think this celeron is corresponding laptop version of desktop version
That was the erstwhile mobile Celeron-

The Celeron M however has a completely different architecture than the dektop celeron...In fact the only differences between th Pentium M (Dothan I think) and the Celeron M is the 1MB onboard Cache on the celeron vs. 2 MB on the Pentium...the other difference being the llack of speedstep technology on the celeron M (Speedstep basically slows down the CPU under reduced load conditions yielding ~20% higher runtime on battery.)
After running some benchmarks between Pentium M based laptops and Celeron M based laptops, I came to the conclusion that for the same clock speed, the Pentium M gave ~10% better performance than the Celeron M on CPU intensive operations (Video encoding/MP3 encoding etc)
whats difference between touchpad and trackball....???????????
Trackball is a rubber like thingie in the middle of the KB that you use for moving the mouse.....works like a smalljoystick
Touchpad is a pad jsut below the KB on which you move your finger to move the mouse....
OK...this is going nowhere, it is difficult to explain the difference b/w the two unless you try it out for yourself :)

If all you care for is ram, just get that acer sempron notebook that costs around 30K and add a 512MB stick to it. It'll cost you max of around 35K and its faster than the celeron m notebooks.

hi there...thanks for that point...

just one q i hope u r referring to aspire 3002...

actually speed (maintining cost under check) is my main concern....

do u think sempron 2800+ (i dont know what all these means; always used intel) is adequate or reasonable...

my budget is actually 30 K but would be ready to spend till 40-45 K max

regards

Nope Superczar, there is an arch difference in Celeron M and Pentium M, especially if the Celeron M runs at 1.5Ghz or lower. The ones above are the same core (I think)

Yeah i meant that lappy... The sempron 2800+ is nothing but an A64 with 64bit disabled and lesser cache. For the price, it cannot be beaten. In fact, it'll be faster than probably the old banias core pentium m chips as well. The notebook is great... awesome build quality and config for the price.

the older celeron Ms had a 512 KB cache.....while the old pentium Ms had a 1 MB cache....I being a sucker fell for it and got a Pentium M 715 laptop....
Te new Celeron Ms have 1MB cache whle the new Pentium Ms have a 2MB cache,,,,,

A friend of mine bought a Celeron M (celeron M 360, 1.6 gghz, 1 MB cache) based compaq for 32K last month and his machine beats mine on video conversion speeds :-(

Also , i couldn't really see any appreciable difference in battery consumption....both machine run around 3-3.5 hrs under normal usage(The battery is exactly the same in both :-(...so much for speedstep technology....

as for semprons, my desktop has a sempron 2400...both the Pentium M 715 and celeron M 360 beat it hands down ...

What you and I have is the Socket A sempron, while the Acer lapton has the newer Sempron which is based on Socket 754 and is basically an AMD 64 processor without the 64 bit technology and with lower cache mem, but has the same 800 Mhz hyper transport system.

trsut me i do appreciate all the replies...but i am getting more confused ...can someone please sort out everything in a simple understandable manner for a poor layman (like me)...

Sempron = powerful processors, cheap, but lower battery life

Celeron M/Pentium M = reasonably powerful as well, with good to better battery life

Celeron M's are cheaper than Pentium M's. But they perform very similarly , which means the price difference between a Celeron M and Pentium M just isnt worth it at times.
