look at the lighting that is reflected off the surfaces of various objects, instead of the direct lighting on the subject.
 
Those are offline renders. HDR existed in offline renders since ages. Most raytracers use 32bits per component for calculations. Convincing renders nonetheless. There is a mod called hdrbloom for hl2 that gives fake HDR. Looks pretty convincing though. Be prepared to drop the resolution as it runs a bit slower than normal hl2.
