Hi Gang,
I have attached an image ss of my PSU below. It was bought from a friend's friend a year back after my generic mercury psu died. This PSU is currently powering Athlon 3200+ single core, asus mobo, 2 gb ddr ram, 8600gt, 1 hdd,17" CRT monitor.

I have plans to upgrade my complete system. It will be in small parts.
Will this PSU be able to power an 955BE OR i5 + MOBO + 4GB DDR3 RAM + video card(8600gt for now, 5850+new monitor a few months later).
Trying to save some money on PSU. Won't compromise on it, if it poses a risk though. SMPS gurus please advice. I don't want to go for vx 450/gp 650 AA/VX 550 blindly unless it cannot be avoided.

it can work until you buy the 5850.
955/i5 with 8600GT can easily run on it.
If it works for now with 8600gt, it should suffice. I have no immediate plans for upgrade to 5850, maybe at best a 4670/4850.
Corsair VX 450
OUTPUT SPECIFICATIONS: Corsair VX450W
AC Input 90-264VAC, 5-9A, 47-63Hz
DC Output +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +5VSB
Maximum Output Current 20A 20A 33A 0.8A 3A
Maximum Combined 140W 396W 9.6W 12.5W
450W

On paper, it shows better stats than the VX 450. But i am not sure if splitting the current on 3 , 12v lines would have an impact, as each individual line is not much.

Will it be able to run a 720BE/955BE + 4850?

It shows 44 amp on 12v rail, but 324/12 = 27A. Actual might be lower i guess. Does 4850 need more than that to run safely?

4850 needs only bout bout 28A on 12v rail and bout 30A for a quad + 4850.

Yours meets the requirements easily, but the thing is,> is the brand reliable? Some low quality PSU delivery way lower output than specified, like Cooler master Extreme Power Series.

Either get 4670/4770/5750/5770 etc.

it shud run 955BE with any of these cards. But dun risk on OCing the proccy too much on it.

Its an Acbel unit according to the UL number, the same OEM for a number of CoolerMaster units. Their quality varies widely, since they make the fairly average Extreme Power Plus series and the much better Real Power units as well. So without bench-testing it, its hard to say.

It does not have better stats than the VX450. The combined 12V rail capacity is 27A; which is less than the 33A on the VX450. No clue if the ratings are specified for 25C or 50C ambients either.

Should do fine with the quad-core and an 8600GT, but even if it does deliver its rated power you would definitely need to switch for a better one once you step up to the 5850.
