Guyz As the title says my Chipset fan is shouting at me like hell.. What can be the problem.. the noise was there for 2 days...but i was not able to find the source. Now after removing all the fans including the Xp-90's(for abt 5 secs to see which one is making noise) i found that Chipset fan is making that noise.. Its irritating guyz.. Plz help me out. My mohterboard is DFI Lanpsrty UT Ultra-D, less than 2 month old :'( :sos:

Well DJ it almost touches it..but there is 1 line of gap between both them. I even removed the gfx card, but the noise is coming..but when i pressed the HSF the noise reduces a little... but when i leave it noise increases again.

Edit: here is the pic of the same

How loud is the noise ?? i mean is the fan rotating at 6000 rpm or thereabouts ?? if so then a little bit of noise is to be expected and is normal.

ok the chipset fan rpm is 5444.. and sound is louder than the Antec tri LED fan.. 50% more than that. chipset temp is 44 at idle, stock volts.

has this loud noise started happening recently.?? if so switch of the m/c for about 10 minutes (to cool down the bearings of the fan) and restart again. post back ur observations....

OK i did what u told sir. Well when i started my comp, the chipset fan made very high noice, then the noise level went down after 5 secs... i again restarted samething happened. But the HSF is not making the noise constantly, only once in 10mins or 15mins.

Well it does make lot of noise,i am completely aware of that. :P

And only i know what all i have done to silence it but with no success.

In the end i did one thing,i turned off the fan and installed a 80mm fan right infront of it and it worked.

Temps earlier hovering in the range of 50c came down to 42c.Noise was also reduced a lot.80mm fan makes much lesser noise than the chipset fan spinning at 5000rpm+

oh and btw,i had fixed the 80 mm with 4-5 layers of double sided tape between the fan and the case floor.this helped in dampening the noise a bit.

hope this helps.

use the smartguardian and manually adjust the fan speed to 4-4.2RPM.

thats what i have done.

Solves the problem. Temp may go up my 1C or so at full load but thats acceptable rather than this untolerable noise.

Guyz i tried out what Darklord Said, its working fine now:).. and with reduce of 1c in chipset temp:D. Thanks a lot darky.

Saiyan, not sure if it's applicable to chipset fan's, but you can disable the smart fan control in you dfi's bios and see.

Well putting an 80 mm fan is the easy way out ....but be careful since that 80 mm fan is not monitered (no RPM sense output). over a period of time if this fails too and you do not take notice of it then this could lead to over heating of the chipset and its subsequent demise. (assuming ur original chipset fan has failed....which is bound to happen unless remedial measures are taken ....)

This way you will never get to know why the fan was making lots of noise .....(dirty bearing). This clogged bearing can lead to failure of the fan as had happened to darky and chic magnet (overheating of the chipset spoiled his (chic's) Asus A8n dlx m/b)
better alternative will be to remove the fan and oil / lubricate it or simply change it to a bigger 50 mm fan (lower RPM) with rpm sense output, in the same chipset heatsink, as was done by me on the same m/b which is at present with quad.

Well guyz this is only temporary... I have installed the Cooler Master 120mm UV fan not a 80mm fan. Will check out whats wrong with the Chipset fan.

^ Yep, deejay is right.. its most likely a dust problem. Take a brush or something and delicately try dusting out the fan area, i've found that helps in my case whenever i get the loud noises.

Was considering replacing it with the Evercool VC-RE a while back, but dint get time to pursue the idea.

BTW Deejay any info you can provide on the 50mm fan you put in lieu of the default fan ?
