Cold fear is Ubisoft’s venture into the survival horror genre. Let’s have a look and see whether this game is worth the survival horror fans game collection. Developed Darkwork’s Cold Fear puts in the boots of Tom Hansen, an ex-army man and now in the US Coast Guard. Something has gone wrong aboard the Russian whaler “Eastern Spirit†and a CIA strike team is sent to investigate it (as usual). But something or someone aboard the ship finishes off the strike team and the USCG is asked to search and investigate what went wrong. Here steps in our hero Tom Hansen who armed with a pistol is now left alone on the whaler left to survive and try to solve this mystery. But the whaler is inhibited by living as well as dead things as Tom soon learns. Ok now that’s probably a rehash of most modern horror/survival games. What sets Cold Fear apart from the rest are the settings of the story, it takes place aboard a whaler which is in the middle of storm and then proceeds to a Oiling rig in the middle of nowhere. Like most survival horror games you need not rack your brains as to what kind of enemies you will probably be facing in the game, the include the usual assortment of mercenaries, zombies, disfigured creatures etc etc. Apparently all this is due to the fact that the Russians discovered some creature (tagged as “exocels†in the game) and started conducting experiments on them in order to “learn†about them and use the knowledge for their nefarious gains. Of course in true survival horror style games, the experiment has gone awfully wrong and now the creatures born as a result of the experiments now roam free.

Darkwork’s have managed to capture the atmosphere aboard the whaler and the oil rig in middle of a storm pretty effectively. The whaler seems to rock from side to side with each lashing of the waves. This itself lends a realism to the atmosphere along with the rain drops and the lashing of the wind on the screen. If you are not careful while walking on the ship you could be knocked off into the sea and the mission would be ended. Be careful though since the rolling and rocking of the ship can lead to sea-sickness. You will realize its effectiveness once you start playing the game yourself.
The game revolves around shooting down/taking down the enemies and finding keys/card, finding routes etc. It consists of the usual stuff that most horror games are made of. The game has two modes, the usual fixed camera third person view and an over the shoulder (pseudo) first person view. The first person view will be the preferred mode for most PC gamers since it is much easier to score headshots on the enemies. Yeah! You
Guessed it right the brains of the zombies need to be shot. This makes for a good splatter fest with the blood sometimes blurring your vision. The default third person view won’t be a favorite among the PC gamers and I recommend it only once you cleared the area off enemies. The game includes interaction with other NPC’s as well including the Viktor Kamsky, his daughter Anna, a CIA operative Benett. The mystery unfolds through a series of log files, letters, and journals so it is important that you read those in order to understand the story. In addition to that these pieces of information also serve to remind you of how to use to environment against your adversaries (for e.g.: blowing up a gas pipe to kill someone in close vicinity, destroying certain artifacts etc.) and for achieving certain objectives in the game.

However for a horror title I did not find it scary enough, maybe an overdose of recent titles of the same genre might be the reason. Most of the time I was almost ready for the enemies, the predictability of the game is quite high. Another frustrating thing is the back-tracking involved with most survival/horror game and this one sticks to the norm. The game also lacks a map feature so players require memorizing the locations and places in order to successfully complete missions. The developers might have taken off the map feature to add to the realism of the game, however it adds to the frustration of the gamer. The ship is decked with Russian names for the section like crew quarters, showers, galley etc; but a quick aim at the name reveals a English translation on the players hud (Nicely done if you ask me). The worst part in the game is perhaps the save system. Yes you guessed it right, it doesn’t allow you to anywhere anytime instead a save point system is used. And boy does it suck! Also included for us pc gamers is some button mashing which you will get to use in the game during extreme close encounters with the enemies and in the last boss fight. The enemies can be classified into two types: the live and the undead :p. The live ones consist of Russian mercenaries while the undead consists of experiments gone wrong on humans. The enemies consist of the seemingly harmless exocels, the exo-nests, the awful exo-shades, the cannon fodder exo-mutants and so on.

The game arms you with plenty of weapons like the handgun with a laser sight, a AK-47, a MP5, a grenade launcher, a experimental spear gun/harpoon gun, a shotgun and a flame thrower. The ammo is also effectively spread out and requires searching the bodies of the zombies and the soldiers. One irritating thing I found was that once a zombie was killed you need to rush and search him for ammo since after he “evaporates†the ammo the zombie has also disappears. The med-kits are also spaced properly but you cannot save the med-kits or the ammo like many survival horror games like RE4 and SH4. So the player will need to memorize and back-track to places where the med-kits are located in order to use it. There is a weapon armory aboard the rig where the player can go for quick recharge of his ammo. The bad thing is only two weapons are armed with flash lights, the handgun and the mp-5. This might cause some inconvenience to the players since if they ammo on one of the weapons equipped with the lights is finished then weapons switching might be needed in case of an enemy encounter.

The graphics in the game are great with some neat shader and dynamic lighting effects.
The animations are done well and this is evident from Tom’s gait when the whaler is rocking in the rough seas. The creature effects have been done nicely and the animations as well. The textures though not as good as seen in recent shooters like half life 2 and Farcry and detailed and add to the atmosphere of a old rusty whaler and a abandoned oil rig. The weather effects in the game rule, the constant splattering of the water drops on the screen and the wind. The cut scenes are mostly pre-rendered CGI videos which are triggered depending on certain events. The physics seem to be pre-programmed though and offer limited interactivity. For e.g.:
You cannot shoot the lights out (who wants too!! :P)or shooting the moving parts doesn’t result into anything. There are the usual interactive elements including shooting barrels to fry the enemies, opening doors, holding on to the railing to steady aim or to prevent falling off.
The sounds in the game are realistic from the lashing and the swell of the waves to the shrieking of the exo-mutants. The thunder effects, the creaking of the Oil rig under the pressure of the storm are some of the better effects in the game. The audio department has been handled quite nicely in the game and adds a lot to the eerie atmosphere of it.
The puzzle solving isn’t difficult at all. The veteran gamer will find no problems in solving the weak puzzles.

Overall Cold Fear is a good shooter but with could have been much better if a map feature, save game feature and more scare factor. But the game deserves a look and a space in your game collection I might add. It’s a good if not a great attempt at trying to give survival/horror fans something different in terms of the game settings and locations.
After finishing the game in hard mode the extreme hard mode is unlocked but I don’t think players will hang around that much. Once you finish certain objectives the concept art of the game is revealed in the bonus menu. So if you are a sucker for concept art like me; rejoice. The game is pretty short; it won’t take more than 8-9 hours of your precious time.

Pros: Unique settings, Great graphics, Great use of atmosphere, short game.
Cons: Save game system sucks, Zero re-playability, not scary enough.

awesome review blade, hehe ur the only source for the pc review of this game as neither gamespot nor ign have reviewd the game on the pc.and good to hear that the game can be nicely played on the keyboard and mouse :P

Okay bought the game on ps2, and i swere i am telling the truth, my 13 yr old brother FINISHED it in a day!! Took him about 7 hrs straight from the morning to night, in the end he said the game was easy, since he's beaten every Resident Evil and Silent Hill, when compared to those, Cold Fear is easy and clues to missing keys and file are easy to find throughout the game. Otherwise, i've completed about half of it, they have got the atmosphere right. Realism from shooting to walking is amazingly real. If compared with Silent Hill 4, Cold Fear beats it by miles. Where Sh4 tried action and realism it failed, in Cold Fear its perfect! Cold Fear may not come out to what you were expecting, its actually an 'Action' game instead of an horror game. If you are a fan of survival adventure genre and love games like Max Payne and Hitman, this is sure to blow you away. But if you're looking forward to some horror game, you may end up dissapointed, it has got some of its freak points, but doesn't actually scare you.

a 7/10 imo.

A Nice review you have there Blade....post a few more screenshots of some action scenes....as in you fighting some enemies etc....i am sure they would look good.

I shall look forward to playing this game once i upgrade my comp.

@XT: I do have some more screenshots of the game, ufortunately i did not take screenhots of all the enemies as that is considered as a spoiler by many a gamers ;). Right now i cant even go back and take some for you since there are limited save slots and all of them have been overwritten by the last level save games. Although if u'd like a screenshot of the last level boss lemme know ;)

Bravo Blade!!!
This review is definitely much better than the ones that Skoar carries.Blade try getting a free lancer job as a game reviewer or contact Skoar :P
