Colorful Introduces “X3D Gaming Mode” For Improving Gaming Performance Of AMD’s Ryzen X3D Processors

Colorful Debuts X3D Gaming Mode That Disables One CCD on Higher-End X3D CPUs to Improve Performance

With the X3D Gaming Mode, Colorful motherboards will deactivate SMT on Ryzen processors and will benefit X3D processors.

With the Ryzen 9 9000X3D CPUs arriving soon, one of AMD's board partners has unveiled its proprietary technology for enhancing the performance of Ryzen processors. Although it is specially crafted for X3D processors, Colorful says that the "X3D Gaming Mode" can be used on non-X3D processors as well.

This includes all the Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 processors that are installed on Colorful's AM5 motherboards. Colorful published a short video on Weibo illustrating the operation of X3D Gaming Mode on its AM5 motherboards, such as the B650 chipset. The feature can be found inside the BIOS, and once it is turned on, it turns off the SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading) on processors, and depending on whether the CPU has one CCD or two CCDs, it disables the other for transferring the gaming workload totally on one CCD.

This helps the X3D processors immensely, as the CCD with an extra L3 cache will perform better and, with the second CCD disabled, the latency is reduced, which affects performance. On the other hand, the feature will also help elevate the performance of non-X3D processors, as in some scenarios, switching off SMT does improve performance, but this varies with scenarios.

Overall, for processors like Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the X3D Gaming Mode is more ideal than on the single CCD non-X3D processors. Keep in mind that the performance of the Ryzen 9 9900X3D may be affected noticeably when one of its CCDs gets disabled. Since the processor brings only six cores on each CCD, it may not be ideal for a lot of users.

However, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D will totally behave like a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is currently the fastest gaming processor on the planet. The Colorful X3D Gaming Mode reminds us of Gigabyte's X3D Turbo Mode, but the latter works a bit differently and doesn't disable SMT or CCD but tweaks some CPU parameters.

Both of these technologies are accessed from the BIOS and one has to experiment with them to find out what works for them the best and what does not. As far as Colorful's claims are concerned, it showed an improvement of 17% performance in PUBG when the X3D Gaming Mode was turned on, which is defintely impressive.
