so the problem is all of a sudden my combo drive of the lappy has stopped detecting any kinda cds but it runs all kinda dvds smoothly , weird problem, god why me, catch some of the techies outta here ;)

i cannot even format and reinstall xp as got only xp in cd rom version , also nero does detect it as a combo drive and in info tool too there are tick marks for the combo drive the drive is toshiba dvd rom sd-r2212

prolly lens is busted...the same happened to my DVD ROM...reads DVDs, not CDs...got a replacement

Sometimes even dust on the optical lens could cause your drive to act funny. Try getting the lens cleaned from a professional service centre.

i have cleaned it myself with ip alcoholand yesterday flashed it too with the originsl bios and did not try out upgrade bioses , what is rev a and rc1 or smthin it was quite confusing but then picked up the original firmware and upgraded no

no no.

still no cds detected but dvds running damn smoothly.shall i try advanced firmwares for the same.

Never ever use IP or acetone like hard Dissolvents on the Lens - they permanantly damage the Lens
very true.
it is stated here on the site to use moistened cotton buds, if at all needed, Vicky most probably the laser power level for cd read/write operations are screwed up.
There are two small variable resistors (v/r) on the lens assembly. one controls the laser power level for dvd operations and the other for cd operations.

by turning these v/r's a small amount (about +/- 15 to 30 degrees ) many a times this problem is solved.

but the problem for you will be to identify which v/r controls which (dvd /cd ) operations. and if you mistakenly use the wrong v/r you will loose the ability to read / write dvd's even hence it would be advisable for you to take this unit to a good repair shop and get the laser level re-calibrated.

no amount of bios flashing will help as it is not a bios problem. infact most of the times newer bioses are released by co's so that more and newer discs are easily recognised. (disc compatibility issues) thats all.

flashing should be done only if user faces some issues which are specifically mentioned in the readme.txt file of the bios.
