Revival of the Commandos series!
I played Commandos: BEL and Commandos 2: MoC back in the day when I was in school/ college (golden days!) and absolutely loved them, MoC was such a brilliantly made game, such great levels. Haven't played Commandos 3 though.
Have been playing the SP campaign of this latest offering in the series on PC for the last few days. Still in the early stages of the game (Mission 4). I have mixed initial thoughts so far:
- Game is like Commandos 2 but it's more linear.
- Missions are big and you have to take your time, focusing and planning are key before taking down enemies. Lots of trial and error but that's the fun of it!
- Background music during a mission is not great, should have much better. Doesn't give exciting vibes at all, not at all tension inducing. Nothing like Commandos 2 which is a shame.
- Gameplay is addictive but is hard and taking down every guard on the map can feel tedious after a while which is why I have been taking this slowly to avoid burn out.
- When you succeed in taking out enemies after careful and meticulous planning it's a rewarding feeling and that's the real motivation here for continuing to play.
- Graphics are decent but could have been better. When you zoom into the map models, buildings and other structures I feel it could have been rendered better but I've never been a huge hunter for graphical quality, for me it's the gameplay and that's where this game has not disappointed so far. Besides most of the time you will remain zoomed out of the map when playing so it's okay.
- I'm pretty sure as I progress deeper into the game the missions are going to get more complex and I'll have to handle more squad members together. So far have only tackled The Green Beret, The Sapper and The Sniper. The Beret is still a beast and the primary man for taking down most of the obstacles in your path to successfully completing a mission. Also, you can set up two squad members together to take down enemies simultaneously which is very handy for sticky situations and staying stealthy.
- From what I have read online is that console versions have bugs/ game progress hindering bugs as well. PC version is stable and so far has been bug-free for me. Controls work a lot smoother on PC...this game in all honesty I feel is tailored for a mouse and keyboard.
Will post more impressions as I progress further. If anyone else is playing this do post your thoughts on the game.
Cheers!
