Comp restarts/no display

Posting a problem which my friend is facing. No idea what the problem is so putting it in this section.

Quoting him:

Day before yesterday the comp was getting restarted after every 30 minutes. And if not restart, it used to hang. Even keyboard mouse wouldn't work. Yesterday, there was no display (not even the bios). Today it started working for a while and then again it started restarting. Now it restarts like every five minutes.

He uses XP professional.

He tried booting through safe mode and it logged in but restarted when he clicked on an app. Also he told me if he tried any app it would restart except Google Chrome.

His config from all I know is

2ghz core 2 duo intel

2gb ddr2

some gigabyte mobo

uses onboard graphics

and some 160gb hard disk

(I've asked him to message me the entire config)

Is this the case of a virus or some hardware failure?

try to boot to bio and see if it still restarts, if it does then, remove HDD and Optical drive and then test the same, if it still restarts, reseat Mem, Power connector, all expansion cards. ... try again, if it still happens, strip down the system jyst to mobo, mem and the display and see if the system still restarts.

Alright I've told him to do so. Will post what he says here.

Update:

He was on the bios and few minutes in the keys stopped working and it hanged. He restarted the system and there was no display.

Initially looks like a memory n Mobo Issue, also if the mobo has onblord gpu, remove the expansion gfx card and connect the external display to onboard vga out and set the bios to default and then try again.
