CPU/Mobo comp won't boot with 2gb ram?

my friend has an asus a7n266vm mobo, bios rev 1004,award ver 6

i have 2 1gb ram sticks 400mhz, both have the same specs.

the comp works fine if i use either stick in either dimm slot but doesnt even start the POST ram check if i put in both the ram sticks.

asus site says the following

-Dual Channel Memory Architecture

-Supports up to 2GB of PC3200/2700/PC2100/PC1600 DDR memory

-2 DIMM sockets

Note: Dual-channel PC3200 (DDR400) mode requires AGP graphics card.

does the 'note' mean that i cant use 2 400mhz sticks without a gfx card??

any suggestions to fix this?

Are bot the sticks of the same make ? That board has issues with PC3200 memory...

try to reduce the speed from 400 to 333 in the bios and see if it works. Did the board ever work with 2 sticks of ram?

a8n266vm does not support 333 or 400 mhz ram i think. it supports only 266.
make it 266 & try.

does that means the mobo cant use both ram slots at once?

and i cant find anything to change frequency in the bios

It cant use more then 1gb Ram, nevertheless update to the latest bios and try, also are the ram sticks exactly similar ?

you can have these isssues when the ram's are not having matched timings means the latency of the ram's is different .Try getting the smae timing rams .I don't have an idea about the board so you can really look up the manufacturer's site for really good deatils ,or keeping posting till you don't get a good reply .bye :rofl:

Just check and c in manufacturer's website whther Dual channel memory clashes with sharing of ram with onboard graphics
