Someone I know needs a new PC within a few days. Mentioned below is the filled template. Please suggest a suitable config.

  1. Q: What is your budget?
    • 25K

    -
  2. Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
    • Laptop/Not Applicable

    -
  3. Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
    • Was looking at Samsung 2033 (suggest something in that range)
    • Preferably a TB of storage

    -
  4. Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
    • More storage

    -
  5. Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)
    • Mumbai
    • Open to online purchase

    -
  6. Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
    • No

    -
  7. Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
    • Browsing
    • Desktop Processing. Primarily image processing in photoshop.
    • Storing lots of photographs
    • Watching HD movies

    -
  8. Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.
    • Do not want to buy Asus product as I heard the after sales service in India is pathetic

    -
  9. Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?
    • No

    -
  10. Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
    1. Desktop - 1440, Higher the better

    -
  11. Q: Are you looking to overclock?
    • Not in a million years

    -
  12. Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
    • Windows XP (Win 7 in about 6 months from now)

In a budget of 25k....u won't be gaming but HD will be fully used that means a GFX card is in need indeed.
The resolutions 1440 x *** are best on 19" monitors...else depends on u :)
Using photoshop requires a multicore proccy so..
According to me the best configuration for u-
1.E7500(5.6k)
2.GA-G31-S2L(2.4k)
3.ZoTac 9800GT 1GB DDR3(6.4k):)
4.2x2 transcend RAM(fluctuates)
5.dell 1909W(7k)
6.CoolerMaster RS500-PCARA3(2.8k) or zebronics pro series
7.hdd -u can make out

This configuration may go out of u'r budget so u can reduce on the proccy and gfx card (probably x2 240 or 245 & 9600gt or HD4670).
U can even refuse buying a gfx card if u go for Biostar A785GE-(3.1k) and it's always capable of playing low settings games and playing HD videos..:)250 and r
I don't know why but i never trust branded keyboard and mouse since local combo costs rs 250 to me and original costs 750..both last for same time.
I also want to state that the same rig was build by me for my brother 15 days a ago and it's working awesome for him....and we built the rig for the same purpose too(i.e, photoshop and corel draw works+HD videos)..so my recommendation is for this^^

cheers

Proccy- AMD AthlonII X4 620 - 5.3k

M/B- Biostar A785GE - 3.2k (Has a very good IGP(HD 4200) capable of handling HD videos with eaze)

Ram- Transcend 2GB 800MHz DDRII -2k

HDD- Seagate 1TB 7200.12 SATA 3.5" -3.9k

Samsung 20" 2033 - 7.3k/ Dell E1909W- 7k

Cabinet- Zebronics Bijili cabby w/o SMPS - 1.1k

PSU - Zebronics Pro 350w -1.5k

Optical Drive- any DVDRW- 1.1k

Speakers - Altec Lansing BXR1221 -1.1k

Micorsoft/Logitech combo - 0.7k

As you know more the core better it is for multi threaded apps. The Photoshop CS4 is one of those that uses all cores. Check this benchmark AnandTech: AMD's Athlon II X3 435 & New Energy Efficient CPUs: Killing Intel Below $90

This will cost you ~26k approx. Its a bit more than your budget but worth it. Dont compromise with a generic PSU as a good PSU is necessary in the long run as the quad core AthlonII has a 95wTDP.

Hmmm.. Yeah wont be gaming at all and I think the onboards can handle the photoshop attack.

And isnt 95TDP a bit too much? Something greener please?

Ram- Transcend 2GB 800MHz DDRII -2k

HDD- Seagate 500GB 7200.12 SATA 3.5" -3.9k

Seagate 500GB @ 2.6k only.....

Transcend 2GB is for 1.3-1.5k

Get Biostar TA785GE @ 4.5k

Best combo...powerful onboard GPU..

Gigabyte 460W @ 2.5k

This PSU so u can upgrade to a good gfx l8er w/o ne probs.

^^My bad. Typo. typed 500Gb instead of a 1TB :(

Actually 500GB is only 2.4k in most places

Wake up man. 2GB DDRII RAM sells for 2-2.1k now.

multimedia applications love multicore processor so get a cheapest quad core AMD X4 620....... photoshop version CS4 and above(CS5 coming soon:D) is gpu accelerated so get a 9800gt or 4670HD

Alright.. thanks for the suggestions. Will put them together and post here before sending out the shopping list.

BTW will a dell desktop make sense if looking for peace of mind and compact form factor?

A small tip - if you're looking at the compact form factor (Desktop) cabby from Dell.. do note, they only support low profile PCI cards. Get the Mini tower variants.

A Dell might work out more expensive, but yeah should be a better option if you don't have the time to run around for warranty.

Second that CS4 scales well with additional cores, so a quad core will definitely help there... That said, my sis uses Photoshop a lot, and a single core is doing fine etc... :)

Get the AMD solution, for a better overall platform.

Intel Core2Duo 2.9 Ghz CPU, INtel G41RQ Motherboard, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 1 TB SATA Hardisk, 20x LG Dvd Writer, 20" LG make TFT LCD ,Logitech Keyboard and optical Scroll mouse, Cabinet and Power Supply Rs 27750/- all Inclusive
How is this as a config as compared to the one suggested above

^ The config suggested above is much better. And if this is an assembled setup, then the "cabinet and power supply" = generic junk :P

No offence , u know core 2 duo ,quad are over and going with DDR2 is useless now. DDR2 prices will rise later and DDR3 prices will fall

Cpu : AthlonII X4 620 - 5.2k

Mobo : Gigabyte 785GMT-UD2H - 5.9k

Ram : 2gb Transcend DDR3 1333 - 2.4k / 2x2gb Transcend DDR3 1333 - 5k

HDD : Seagate 500gb 7200.12 - 2.3k

Cabinet : CM Elite 310 - 1.5k

SMPS : Gigabyte superb 460w - 2.2k ( Futureproof for Ati 5770 DX11 )

DVD Writer : Samsung/LG DVD R/W- 1.1k

Speakers - Altec Lansing BXR1221 -1.1k

Micorsoft/Logitech combo - 0.7k

Samsung 20" 2033 - 7.3k/ Dell E1909W- 7k

Total - 28k / 30k

It will be worth the extra 5k later on when DDR3 prices will fall rapidly

Take the additional 2 GB DDR3 1333mhz even if it cranks ur budget up by 2k.

It'll be useful in photoshop.

Else take the extra 2gb DDR3 in 1 or 2 months time.

Don't compromise on DDR3 combo

Add a ATI 5770 - 11.5k ( DX 11 , futureproof) later on for better photoshop processing later on when prices will dop.

Why do people want to Add Graphic Card to this setup? The onboard IGP will do just fine. If you say that Photoshop will use graphic card from new release or using it currently then also it doesnt make sense to spend 11k on a graphic card when you are building a low-budget system. Its far better to spend that much on RAM and proccy. I think the best config in this case would be to have an AMD dual or quad core along with a nice MB having an ATI IGP.

I only advised him to buy an gfx later not now

What performance difference are we talking of when comparing the following

1. AthlonII X4 620 vs Intel Core2Duo 2.9 Ghz

2. DDR-II vs DDR-III RAM

3. Its not just the RAM cost but also the M/B cost that varies, so is the onboard chipset any better too?

Got designers working on CS at our studio. If your looking at print runs then ensure that the person has a good look at the LCD for color reproduction. I have had to chuck 2 LCDs because they just did not get calibrated right.
End result - even though the color looked good on screen, when the stuff was sent to printers it looked completely different.

Also would recommend upping your RAM depending on the image size being worked upon and the number of layers being added.
