Someone I know needs a computer for general use, mainly surfing movies MSoffice. and of course casual gaming though not the main requirement.

Hardware desired....
17" flat monitor
CD writer

Budget: within 20K

Well here is the cheapest config you can go for-

AMD Sempron 2200+ -----------------> 2100/-
Asrock VIA KT266Pro Chipset Board----> 2400/-
256 MB DDR400 RAM -----------------> 1500/-
40GB Seagate Barracuda HDD---------> 2050/-
Cabinet+SMPS -----------------------> 900/-
5X CDRom ---------------------------> 700/-
17" Monotor -------------------------> 5500/-
Keyboard ----------------------------> 350/-
Optical Mouse -----------------------> 350/-
Basic Speakers ----------------------> 500/-
600VA UPS --------------------------> 1800/-

Total - 18,150/-

I dont think you can find a more cheaper and more decent config than this one.

I guess this helps you. ;)

would recommend a sempron 2400+ and a 80 gig hdd.. should be under 20k.. 80 gig is just a few hundred more than a 40 gig drive

@hooli , yes for non flat

20K is too low for any modern day config. realistically ask ur friend to increase his budget to 25K atleast. there is no point buying technically old and out dated parts to make it fit within ur budget of 20K. and since he would not be playing heavy duty games at reasonably playable frame rate and resolution it rules out buying a seperate "Real" gfx card since it will consume a major portion of ur budget.

ur friend should be thinking along these lines.
Kindly note i do not know the exact prices. hence some variations will be there. these prices i have obtained from various postings on net.
1) 3000+ winnie +MSI RS480-M2 (Socket 939) xpress 200 m/b = 14K (approx.)

2) 256 m/b ram DDR 400 = 1.35K

3) 40 gb hdd = 2K

4) Cd writer = 1.3K

5) Monitor = 5.5K

6) *case + psu + k/b + mouse + spks = 2.3 K (approx.)
E & O E.
* these are for the cheapest generic k/b + mouse + spks

i have reserved about 1.6K for the case + psu, and around .7 for others. I have seen 1~2 W rms cheap spks for around 200~ 250 rs. @ lamington road. (sound quality is not the issue here, hehe)

Total = 26.5K
Alternatively
You friend can go in for a amd64 2800+ (754) cpu + Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M m/b combo for 9 ~ 9.2K

the rest of the components being same. so the cost will come down to approx. 22K.

You can get a 939 3000+ and asrock mobo for 12K

Then what about graphics device (equivalent to the one on RS480). if we add a equivalent graphic card would not the budget go ballistic.??

I some how totally forgot about the display.
I figured that everybody will be using an external video card. :rolleyes:

Xpress 200 chipset is really fast. The only reason I didnt get this, No AGP only PCI-E :( and doesnt supoort any overclocking.

You guys are missing the most critical issue, none of the everyday applications requires high end processing. But multi tasking does require more RAM so get a slower proccy but get more RAM atleast 512 mb..

aces, even a 600 mhz cpu is sufficient for everyday office application. and yes i agree 512 mb ram would be better (less paging of memory) but since we are on a extremely tight budget it is better to start of with 256 mb and "upgrade" to 512 later.

but do consider this aspect also.

it is easy, quicker, and economical to upgrade ram rather than upgrading the whole cpu /mobo combo in the near future.

since we are going for a base platform of A64 now, i do not think the user will need to upgrade it for say another two years.

anyways do post what is your ideal configuration for the budget mentioned above.
