My friend's system is shutting down at irregular intervals. Please help me to figure out what exactly the problem is.
Proccy = C2D
Mobo = Xfx 630i,

What all I've tested till now:-

Power supply
I've tested it with a different fully functional psu, but still problem is present as it is.

CPU overheating
Its idle temp is around 60 degree but when I ran Intel burn test then this CPU passed the test 5 times consecutively without shutting down for a minute even. But temps were around 108 degree Celsius and I was amazed to see that how is it even running at that temp, IMO Intel cpu shuts itself if it reaches 100 degree. So basically I ran Intel burn test software for around 30 mins but no shut down.

Ram is also working fine IMO else it would never start(Correct me if I'm wrong).

And most important thing : It never shuts down in front of me. :(

According to my friend's observations : It shuts down not restarts or get reseted. Secondly no BSODs.

So its my request to all guys please help me out here.

That's the worst part according to me and it happens all the time with me as well... :@

You haven't mentioned the Exact C2D proccy your friend is using. Each C2D variant has different Operating Temperature ratings AFAIK.

Neway, It has to be an overheating issue if everything else is running fine. Check for CPU cooler fan failure.

If the cooler is working fine, replace the thermal paste and check what you have. I suppose that he might have used a poor thermal paste and that may have disintegrated with the heat and age leading to heating issues.

Proccy is e7200. And if it is an overheating issue then how can it survive Intel burn test and also keep on running even at temps around 108 degree???? I think problem is something else. Please fill in more suggestions. Tomorrow I'm going to do a virus check or most probably reinstall the OS. This might help. Please let me know other possibilities in this case.

It doesn't look like a Virus triggered event to me. Nor does it seem to be a OS issue. But do reinstall the OS and see. If not anything else, it'll atleast help in ticking off the possible reasons.
Yea, any thing else that I should try????

Forgot to mention, I also checked the hard disk, its pretty good and not a single bad sector in it.

I just thought this:

By any chance, does the shutdown occur only when your friend has put something to download and left the PC?? Downloads especially with DAP?

Asking coz I have a friend (a total noob) who had this exact same problem but I realised that he had setup DAP to shutdown after download completion and he didn't remember this!!!

So, each time he put a file for download and switched off the monitor, the PC would shut down 'by itself' (obviously due to DAP)...

Damn, I had a real tough time while troubleshooting his PC... :P

Nopes, not internet at his place, it is shutting down during normal usage.

Could be an earthing issue. Also reset the CMOS, nForce was also picky with the RAM..! The system not stalling at 108C means either the setting is off in the BIOS or temperatures are being logged incorrectly. Corelate temperatures using two different applications. Please do not run stress applications --- bad way to find RC of BSOD/shut down. Re-do the physical build and connections for all the hardware specially the HSF assembly.

Your pc is simply overheated. I am guessing your computer has been on for a long time which could be one of the most common reason for overheating.
Start by cleaning you pc's vents to allow more airflow in the cabinet. Dust and bad cabling and result in poor airflow. You can also try changing the fans/cabinet to increase airflow. If that doesn't work either, you could either get your proccy rma'd stating the cause being overheating or install a good quality thermal paste and get a Cpu Cooler. e.g. prolimatech / noctua / thermalright / coolermaster / corsair.
If that still doesn't work....time to upgrade your proccy. :) Hope it helps.

Also set you bios to alert you when you temp crosses 90 degrees. Ideally it shouldn't cross 90degree if you want your proccy to have a decent life ;)

Cleaned everything and reassembled. Temperatures are down. Max temp is now 65C. But when I came back to my home, then my friend called me saying that problem is still existing. He's saying that once it shuts down after that it doesn't starts after numerous attempts. But after a while it starts. Secondly, I did complete virus check and all that. Please help me out.

how are you sure about RAM working fine ? did you run memtest ?

I inserted another stick of brand new ram and removed the previous one.

Run the system bread boxed. Meaning out of the cabinet. Keep the board on a non-conductive soft surface.
This will let me know regarding any earthing issues. Am I right???? Will do it for sure.

So you have checked the PSU, CPU, RAM, HDD and also cleaned cabinet etc

now the motherboard is in question now.

Hmmmm, means I've to arrange another motherboard in that case........ Anything else left that I might be missing?

These are clear symptoms of an overheating issue if you ask me. Ask your friend to note his exact activities when the PC shuts down. Check for a pattern if any...

It might be a software issue... highly unlikely but worth giving a try.

It can't be software issue as many times it simply doesn't starts. I have check max temps using two software and both were giving same values. Max temp it was reaching was 65C by running prime95 and Intel burn test. No pattern here. :(

I'm damn confused. :(
