Q: What is your budget?
~25K
Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
I currently have an eight-year-old machine with a 1 Ghz Celeron,
512MB SDRAM, 40GB HDD. *Anything* would be an upgrade
from this.
Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
Current machine is a laptop, so only things I can keep
are the USB keyboard and mouse, and a pair of headphones.
Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
Here's what I am looking at:
CPU - AMD Athlon X4 635
Motherboard - ??
HDD: 320 GB SATA
RAM: 2 GB DDRII
Monitor: 18 or so inch, whatever's currently popular/VFM
GPU - on board
Cabinet - Zebronics Bijli (no preference, just that I've seen this recommended here)
SMPS - FSP Saga 350W (seen this recommended as the cheapest "safe" PSU)
Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
No, no upgrades foreseen in the near future.
Q: Are you looking to overclock?
No.
Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
No Gaming. Apart from "browsing, email, movies, etc.",
I compile software a lot, and this can be easily made
to use more cores ("make -j4" on Linux) so that's why
I'm leaning towards the Athlon X4. I'm also willing to
skimp on monitor size and HDD space if I can get a more
powerful processor/more RAM.
(I toyed with the idea of getting a 550/555, but I'd
rather get the guaranteed 4-cores than risk a failed/
unstable unlock. Don't think I can fit a Phenom II X4
in this budget...)
I'm especially looking for suggestions for a motherboard,
because I have no idea how to compare them. I don't
need any fancy features and I'm happy with any low-end
on-board graphics (but no NVIDIA, please).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
