A friend of mine would like to play current generation of games at medium to medium-low settings on a 17inch LCD monitor. He's tight on bugdet, 20K max
and following items are required. He don't mind purchasing 2nd hand items as well in case some warranty is left

1) Cabinet
2) SMPS
3) CPU
4) Motherboard
5) Ram
6) Mouse + Keyboard
7) GFX Card.

I'm thinking of follwing :-

1) Cabinet : CM Elite 330 (1.9 K)
2) SMPS : CoolerMaster Extreme Power 390W (1.9K)
3) CPU : E5200 (what's the cost and is it available yet?)
4) Motherboard :Gigabyte G31 (2.6K)
5) Ram : 4 GB Transcend (2.1 K)
6) Mouse + Keyboard (1k)
7) GFX Card : 2nd hand 9800 GT for ~ 6K
=============================================
15 K (without E5200)

Is above good? Maybe if there's 1-1.5 K buffer, we'll go for better SMPS like Extreme Power 460W

get this edited configuration :

1) Cabinet : Zeb Bijli (0.9 K)

2) SMPS : CoolerMaster Extreme Power 390W (1.9K)

3) CPU : E5400 (what's the cost and is it available yet?) (4.7K~5K)

4) Motherboard :Gigabyte G31 (2.35K)

5) Ram : 2gb*2= 4gb Transcend DDR2 800Mhz(2.1 K)

6) Mouse + Keyboard = Logitech Optical(0.6k)

7) GFX Card : 2nd hand 9800 GT for ~ 6K

{P.S. = U'll need a much better SMPS for that and 17'' you will be gaming at low resolutions so 9600GT is more than enough it also beats 9800GT in Video-Quality Tests}

Get a GeForce 9600 512DDR3 for 5.6K selling locally.

My suggestion is:-
1)Get a new HD 4670 Instead of the 2nd hand 9800, For a 17 inch display the 4670 is really all you need. More importantly, it'll be a new card with full warranty(not to mention a very cool and amazingly efficient card).

2)The above solution also solves your PSU dilemma, stick with the cheaper choice.

3)With the 1k or so saved on the GPU and ~1k on the PSU(actually, you can get a slightly higher W rating for a couple hundred bucks more, so you can have both...) , add this to your CPU budget and get the E7300.

Now, it's a very good budget build and IMO the highest overall performance you can get at this price point.

Good luck :)

PS: Your other choices are good btw :happy:

I am saying that it is the min reqd. I am not suggesting that card for the build.

He will do fine with a 9600GT.

Thanks guys. As I mentioned in my 1st post, my frnd would be playing games at, "medium to medium-low settings "

Frankly I don't agree. To play Crysis at 12x10 VHigh you need a GTX 280 at the minimum.

BS...dont misguide others
I can play Crysis @ 1650 with all very high settings with a 4850

A 4670 can certainly play it @ 1280

Why do you talk?
EDIT:
@zanderzone
Your friend need not play on med-low settings. Both the 4670 and the 9600GT will run every game except Crysis(even this will run well provided you compromise on AA/AF/a bit of res., which isn't so bad :) ) on a 17 incher on highest settings with AF and AA enabled. The 9600GT edges the 4670 in terms of performance, but the prospect of buying a more expensive PSU kills the value of that card. I've got nothing against NVIDIA, if you/your friend can wait for the rumoured 9600GT green edition, that's fine as well, although for now, for the above rig, it's had to suggest anything other than the HD 4670.

PS: i have a 17incher, Dont settle for Anything less than 9800gt.

dude 9800GT can run crysis on MAX at 1280x1024 without AA , it will give around 30fps easily .

but HD 4830 from KMD ( 79 $ ) will be better , it will also cost around 6k .

I have got the same rig as yours. At 12x10 High Crysis gives around 28 FPS in the benchmark. Acc to me you need at least 40-50 FPS in the benchmark to have it nice and smooth in real time.

I bet you don't get over 20 FPS at 16x10 V High settings.

A 9800GT is even worse. Don't tell me as I went from a 9600GT only and just tested it again on a Q6600. It wasn't flawless even on 12x8 Med settings.
