Hello,

I need help in deciding a laptop for basic usage.
  • What's your Budget?

30K to 35K
  • What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?

Web surfing, office apps, DVD quality movies.

If possible HD movies.
  • What size and weight considerations do you have?

15.6'' or less size. But still portable.
  • Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest?

Preferably Asus (Sturdy finish, Coolest laptop) or Dell (Best warranty service). I have used these two only. I have no practical idea about other brands. I am open to suggestions. I want to stay away from heating problem.
  • Any other considerations?

Battery life 3 hours, Preferably non-glossy screen. I do not need any pre-installed OS. I will get a Windows 7 later. For Windows 7, I assume the RAM should be 4GB.

I have shortlisted following machines:

Asus K53SD-SX809D / 2nd Generation Core i3 / 4 GB / 500 GB / 2GB Graphics / Free DOS

It is Core i3.

Dell Vostro 1550 2nd Gen Ci5/ 4 GB/ 500 GB/ Linux

Core i5, but no Graphics card included.

I would also like the following machine, but I would not like to stretch the budget:

Please advice. Thanks in advance.

Of course the last laptop is best of the lot but Asus (or FK) has recently increased the price of all Asus laptops. It was 37 something few days ago.

Anyways, your purpose can also be fulfilled by first laptop (Asus). But I'd like to suggest you to go for Asus P35D-SO059D. This is a bang for buck laptop with i5.

Thanks JuGGa,

Please correct me if I am wrong. I believe that for smooth operation of Windows 7, one should have 4 GB RAM. Asus P35D-SO059D has 2 GB only.

Yep, 4GB makes working butter smooth. Whats problem with 2GB, just upgrade it by adding another 2GB, no big deal.

I just want RAM to be factory installed because it is advisable to use the Exactly Same RAM in a machine. RAM modules are more compatible if these are from same manufacturer and make.

In that case, will you say that the first configuration Asus K53SD-SX809D is the best for me?

You're just being too sceptic. Nothing will happen. If ever that happens, or of you feel it will happen, sell the 2GB kit and buy a 4GB one.

You are correct that I am being skeptic

Okay. So after receiving the laptop, I should go to Asus retailer(or any other genuine shop) and get RAM increased. I hope it does not void the warranty.

If you're comfortable enough to do it by yourself, then go ahead, otherwise service centres are always there. Its pretty easy though. Buy these: 2GB & 4GB.
