Hi

I want to buy a portable device on which i can watch movies, listen music, read e books and play games sometimes. Since I am having a dedicated Sony 2gb Mp3 player NWZ-B142F/B and having K508i SE mobile so I am confused which portable device to buy Sony PSP(2nd hand)/Mobile/PMP. Please advice.

Budged: 8-9K (MAX)

I'd suggest the PSP but since you don't plan on playing much games, PSP wouldn't be justified.
Depending on what kinda games you want to play, an IPOD might suite your needs.

If it's mainly movies + music and less of games stick to a PMP. Maybe a itouch or Cowon S9.Itouch has tons of fun games with decent graphics.

If games is the priority get a PSP. Keep in mind PSP's audio output is a bit low compared to PMPs . So it only does a decent job as a music player.

I agree with ^^

if you do not plan to do serious gaming then an iPod touch might be the best option. When i have couple of hours to spare I takemout my PSP and play to my hearts content but when I want a quick fix I just go to my iPod as it has a wide variety of small arcade games.

That doesn't mean that the PSP doesn't have shorter games or the iPod doesn't have longer ones. Either device is very portable and potent piece of hardware.

Both will require that you convert your movies and videos to the required formats, both will need syncing with a computer, albeit no iTunes for the PSP which can be counted as a boon or a curse.

Thank you all for your valuable reply and feedback highly appreciated i was also thinking abt Ipod touch but Ipod touch is very expensive and over priced product PSP seems to be value for money it has also got bigger screen size as compared to Ipod Touch. Yes I am not that much keen to play games i occasionally play NFS Carbon/UnderCover and UT3 on my lappy. This is why I am confused. Also if some price drop is expected then i can wait.

on ebay listing (deals of the week) you can get an itouch for as low as 9450 including free shipping and emi option.

As for PSP, you will need to buy original games. as day by day the PSP modding is decreasing. last i had seen they hadn't cracked the 3.51 firmware, and the PSP GO also is not cracked, nor is the PS3...

even for itouch you require original games, but atleast some stuff is free.

just my thought, although if buying original games is not a problem, then PSP is a good choice, as for music, just get a good pair of earphones, which is enough.

Since you are not so much into gaming , I would suggest you don't get the PSP. As Moshel pointed out an itouch can be bought for about ~10k, so it's not that expensive.

And once you jailbreak your itouch you can even install the *ahem* full version games for free :D .

I am having a dedicated Sony 2gb Mp3 player NWZ-B142F/B + Creative Ep 630. Which is portable enough for me and suffice my music need. So music is something that i am least concerned as of now. Also i will be 70% interested in going for a modded PSP FW but since Movies and Ebook are of prime imp so i can even go with not modded one.

Also I will be more keen to opt for 2nd hand device coz i know my desire will not last for much long :D and in this respect it think one can get psp much easier then Ipod touch. What you ppl say?

@ FaH33m: Dont you think that PSP is value for money from my prospective?

Hmmm not really. I feel the movies are more enjoyable on a Itouch compared to the PSP. Also the itouch or a player like Cowon S9 is better in terms of portability. Atleast the itouch easily fits in a jeans pocket ;).

I have seen lot of my friends buying PSP , playing on it for initial few months and then it's lying around in their drawers .So more than VFM , its the fact that you don't plan to game so much that makes the itouch a better buy for you.

Also from what Ive noticed there haven't been such great PSP titles this year.Looks like the developer support for PSP has gone down.Anyways incase if you plan to try out different games and some classic PSP titles , go ahead and get the PSP !

See,

>> PSP = 60-70% gaming ,30-40% movies. Music on PSP is poor so don't even consider it .anyways you have a player for your needs.

>>Itouch = 60-70% movies ,20-30% games and applications .

Also incase you plan to use wi-fi on the device , the browser on the itouch is lot better than the PSP.

So keep in mind all these things and decide. Shouldn't be difficult once you know your priorities .Best of Luck !

EDIT :

If you plan to get a brand new PSP slim , its not assured that you will be able to mod the PSP.The ones with Original firmware 5.03 can not be modded .Also there's no way to make out what PSP you will be getting without opening the box. So take care of all these things as well ;).

If vid playback is a priority, then don't bother getting a iPod Touch. It has pretty avg playback time for video, there is no way to easily upgrade your battery, no way to upgrade memory or swap out content using memory cards and the screen is pretty non-standard for watching vids.

You would be better of with a proper PMP which offers 8~10 hours of vid playback time and also allows you to swap memory cards that you can keep around with your favorite content and they also support your vid's without need for conversion.

Even PSP makes for a great vid player if you are alright with converting your vids. I use my PSP mainly for vid playback and gaming (50:50). Even with the default battery, it offers a bit more playback time than iPod Touch, and you can buy extra batteries for backup or even larger capacity batteries that can nearly double the playback time. You can also swap out content using memory cards. The screen is also 16:9 and a decent 4.3" making it ideal for watching videos. The only issue is that it has a some what low resolution for a 4.3" screen.

So my take.

Music + Casual gaming + Browsing = iPod Touch

Music + Video = PMP like COWON S9 or O2.

Video + Gaming + Casual browsing = PSP

If you can increase your budget by ~4k you can bet on the cheapest netbook from Samsung/Acer. Or even a second hand Asus EEE for under 10k! You do not get the portability part though. :P

Else check out for players from Cowon such as the good ol' D2. Cowon has a new player J3, lined up for release within the present quarter - has an AMOLED touchscreen display, the battery would last much longer than conventional PMPs, expandable memory through a uSD slot etc. Already launched in S.Korea not sure of the pricing though. You may have to source it from abroad.

The gurus have spoken and I concur. Choose what is best for you by determining your main usage for the device.

Videos look a little poor on the PSP, as compared to the iPod Touch. Games are far better on the PSP, but only if you want to play good, lengthy, and impressive games. iPod can be sufficient for gaming but all the games are short, toned down versions of the PC and console version. It is no way bad though. I loved NFS Undercover both on the PSP as well as the iPod.

If you want to use apps and browser, then iPod is the clear choice. PSP browser is not good. Or maybe I have been spoiled by the uber smooth iPod UI. :P

One thing against the iPod is that you don't want another music player. The PSP music output is really poor, you are better off with sticking to your old MP3 player if you are taking music playback into account.

Think about what you want to use the device for and only then spend your money.

One thing no one has asked about - What is your budget? That will help you make the decision IMO.

The budget of urs is a hinderance else i would have recommended you Sony Ericsson's Vivaz.

Its going to be launched soon in India but price would be 20k+ as i have been told.

It might just suffer from not enuf battery life for a day but otherwise i believe it would have been quite the answer for your question.

Crisp screen with good game already supplied. But budget is the constraint here.

Thank you all for your valuable comments and suggestions. Reps for FaH33m, Lord Nemesis's Avatar and phoenix844884 :) for there admirable efforts to put across there detailed comment on the topic.

Yes I do admit that 8K is less but since i know i will lose my interest within 6 months so i am not to keen to put in more. i.e why i am more keen to opt for second hand device.

@ phoenix844884 : I was unaware of the fact that one can play NFS on touch. I have seen touch and no doubt Movies are good on it. I had seen one movie on PSP long back and at that time i was drooled with the image quality. I think I need to search more abt the Ipod capabilities :D. Any good link for the same :). Also can i get 2nd Hand touch easily?
